Finally got around to installing the new (rebuilt) steering box and then chopped the steering column down and rebuilt it.

Hoses installed...

Then started cutting down the steering column

Drilled out the spot welds on the end cap that holds the bearings

Removed the end cap and cleaned it up along with the inside of the column.

Then spot welded it back in

Test fit the new linkage (recycled from a 77 Lincoln)

polished the column surround and painted the column then installed everything.

What the column and surround looked like before....

and after

With most of the interior work done that was easier with the inner fenders out of the way (heater core and steering column) I moved on to primer and painting them and then started putting the engine bay back together...

The stone guard that I used originally when I repaired the damage and built the grill was from a 72 so I tracked down a 69 stone guard then sanded it down and prepped it for paint. I also hit it with a coat of spray on bed liner on the underside.

once the paint was dry I started reassembling everything...

Still have to adjust a few things to get them fitting right before putting the hood back on and a number of things to button up on the engine but it's coming together.

Thank you, those were some big changes that hopefully make it even more fun to drive... that old rag joint and steering box were just worn out so you were never quite sure where it was heading next Now it should be much tighter and more enjoyable to drive.

This morning I fired it up and cycled the power steering back and forth adding fluid as needed then we bolted on the hood and headed out for Turkey dinner with friends.

Finished lining up the hood and the fenders so now everything is locked in looking pretty good. Going to put a different grill on it for now as I work on the custom one and make a few adjustments.

Thanks! I'm very happy with the way it came together.

Yeah thanks, I agree

The problem is I don't have enough grills for all my trucks without using the custom one. This grill is my best one and wasn't currently on a truck so I put it on. The custom one is going to get repainted to match the truck and the center polished. Fingers crossed it looks good as well. It's a steel one and can be stressed to match the trucks paint so if it turns out like the tailgate I think it will be a great addition.
