thinking its time!

I believe this has been coming for awhile, I bought some ones ranch truck, it was not taken care of but now its mine LOL so I inherit the issues!

I have been doing little things since I got it but it looks like I will need to replace the lpop , from what I was reading , this is no simple task!!

I apparently have to take the clutch fan off to get to the sucker so I am recruiting some help, I have a friend with a shop he can spare some room!
1st of all is there a specific lpop I should consider , also should I just go ahead and replace the water pump too?
This burning oil is killin me , not sure where its burning yet but plan on doing the turbo pedestal and injector rings, I really don't want to replace injectors!

Melling is the famous name for lpop. I guess it's good.

If the fuel injector o rings are leaking the fuel filter will turn black.

I know the thread I have linked below is long, but @jstihl just went through this. There are a lot of good references, instructions and bits of advice in there...

i have been reading that kinda of what makes me think I should go ahead and do the water pump while I have it apart.

his is a little different as he had a leak , I don’t have a leak but I have a hpop that is leaking back down , causing very long cranks to build pressure

You do not have to remove the fan to change the LPOP.

Well, since you’ll be changing the WP do the LPOP while you have the fan out. The OEM bolt is not long enough to pull the harmonic balancer back on during assembly. I purchased a 3’ length of metric all threads with two hex nuts, and cut a piece a couple inches longer than the OEM bolt.
Also, you may inspect the harmonic balancer - if the rubber looks like it is puckering out, go ahead and replace the HB.

What makes you suspect the LPOP just out of curiosity? I think the Melling is considered an upgrade over the OEM unit but you are correct that is not exactly a trivial repair depending on your situation. Yes I would pull the fan and consider doing the water pump also if time and budget allow. You can also upgrade the crank dampener, again if budget allows. But I would be pretty darn certain the LPOP is faulty before touching any of that.

You can get at it from the bottom. It's tight but doable....I've done it.

Again with some great advice sir!

If you do replace the LPOP, I highly recommend the Melling because it is an upgrade and it cannot be installed backward like the OEM one.

That is a good reason to suspect the LPOP, what I think @Brandonpdx is saying is to do your due diligence because that is a fairly significant task to accomplish if that is not the cause of the leak.

I can remember the check ball being the cause, I can remember cracked HPOP reservoir being the cause, etc... Of course, if you are itching to replace the LPOP with a Melling anyway, this is a great excuse of why to press on!

well gotta say yesterday was a crappy day, the ole girl left me on the side of the road! Turns out the couple of quarts of oil every few days had turned into a gallon or more a day, Planning on hpop rebuild, injector rings and turbo pedestal this weekend, with any luck this with cure my issues and i don't have to throw new injectors at it!
