Believe it or not, turbo removal on an E-Series is not all that bad. The hardest part is to remove the turbo air inlet and outlet tubes. But once they're removed, the turbo itself can be finessed out with only a slight effort. Once the turbo is out, access to the HPOP is fairly simple.
I seen the dieseltech ron video of him showing it. But he also had all kinds of stuff removed off the front end of the motor by the light I seen coming through. I know looking at it I was like holy sh!% something not that bad...but I've said that about stuff before. Just didnt want to create more work than what's needed
Well I have to take the egr cooler off cant get pedestal off..
No you don't. The pedestal will come out with a bit of finessing. What you may have to do though, is remove the one bolt that secures the oil supply and return lines to the oil filter housing to the back of the adapter plate on top of the oil cooler. This along with the three 10mm bolts that secure the oil filter housing to the upper oil pan will enable you to move the lines back far enough to twist the turbo pedestal out.
I wish I had seen this while i was still out there. I started draining coolant and took off the alternator and started to take the intake off....I'll go your route in the morning.
The tube that comes into the turbo is what I was fighting getting that pedestal out. It's that dang u clamp welded on it. I tried to just spin it until I seen it was attached.
Btw is there a tensioner pulley? I was able to just lift and take the belt off the alt?
Took the egr out and it was replaced not to long before it went down so it wasnt all groady...but the coolant line for it was black water

I always simply use a prybar, lift the turbo up just high enough so that it is completely off that tube, and knock it out of the HPOP cover with the prybar until it's just laying in the "valley". Once the tube is laying there freely, is when I finesse the turbo out through the doghouse.

The tensioner is exactly the same as what you have on an F-Series application. Yank the belt far enough to engage the "kickstand" to keep the belt in the tension released position.
BTW, when you undo all nine HPOP cover bolts, the three that are under the EGR cooler remain in the cover loose, just until you are able to finesse the cover out enough for you to remove those bolts. Just be careful not to drop those bolts down into the "do not drop zone".
I'm amazed there's still a 6.0 out there in existence still running the original orange EGR cooler inlet hose. For what it's worth, the EGR cooler can be removed from an E-Series van without removing the intake manifold. If all the bolts on the passenger intake to cylinder head are loosened far enough, that side may lift just far enough for the EGR cooler to slide rearward and out through the doghouse.

That's what I was trying to do...the cooler is already loose. that little nipple that plugs into the top of it doesnt seem to want to raise...I guess I'll try a pry bar to motivate it
How far around the horseshoe intake do I go to free enough space? Pedestal is out, hose is off...its that middle nipplr and I assume an oring that's holding it in or something
Well I'm back where I started the day. New pump is in, egr cooler is reinstalled.....broke the very front bolt tightening it down...should that even matter since I welded the cooler shut? I can see if the middle one broke that would be more of an issue with that nipple.
I didnt mess with the discharge tube..should I have changed anything on that?
Do I need a tune with that being welded ?
I havent had a chance to get everything buttoned up. I have to get the rest if that bolt out yet. Just need some mini pliers or something.
The turbo.....I took it into my shop since I cant be out with the van. Took it all apart to clean and the unison ring doesnt have much play. I can get it to move one way and then itll freeze up. Took out the back side and once the plunger is out it moves freely but as soon as you put it in you cant use the ring to spin it back and forth. I looked thru the drain hole and you can see all the gears and sure at first they seem a little beat up but I wouldn't see that doing it. Is there a way to remove it and replace it should I be concentrating on the plunger itself.
Well I'm still here. Replaced the turbo. Went ahead and flushed the oil cooler and cooling system as well and put in rotella elc. Hooked up for an air test again and I can hear a very slight gurgle. First I heard it on one side then not the other...then vice versa. Grrr
