I got the van engine torn down and the heads off last night. Still have to swap the oil coolers, front cover and oil pans but I needed to get the heads to the machine shop today. It definitely looks like the van motor had blown head gaskets in a few spots. Had 1 glow plug that was carboned up the shaft of the glow plug too. It also looks like there are 2 newer injectors on the passenger side too. I bet the mechanic had fun doing those! Standpipes and d-plugs are the updated style.
Does anybody know if the 08+ van engines got the STC updates?
The 08 should have the upgraded STC. It replaced the STC fitting from the factory starting on 2/9/07 Engine serial # 431736 (late 07). Thanks to m-chan68 for that information
They really take a toll in a rusty environment. And the black phosphate coating helps some but not long term.
If you consider putting stainless in their place, stainless and aluminum don’t do well together. Mass quantities of anti seize may help. You have to get into specialized coatings to avoid this corrosion or galvanic action. McMaster has some ultra-resistant coatings, but I went with Zinc Yellow Chromate, which I believe is better then Ford/Int version. I also made sure the fasteners fit to the top of the treaded hole and used antiseize.
As for stainless bolts into aluminum, my go to is aviation prematex liquid. (brush-top can). I learned this a good while back working on marine outdrives and outboards.in saltwater applications. It works long term. There may be some "neverseize products made specifically for this , copper, maybe? but the prematex is readily available and works, at least for me. Some never seize compounds actually enhance the bad galvanic effects of these two dissimilar metals, at least in salt water.
The bolts on my motor were in good shape all of them so I re-used those and pitched the other ones. This motor came out of a bus so I would imagine it wasn't washed much in the winter which certainly doesn't help!
