That seems to be purely a matter of opinion. Plus, I won't mention any names but I've heard more or less identical comments from guys about OBS trucks in general. LoL!
Not totally Bob. If the gear ratios are almost identical with the exception of a granny gear, then what's the gain? Unless you just REALLY want that granny, it's a LOT of work for essentially a ZF-5 with Granny gear.
Now I'm not saying don't do it. I, for one, would love to see the swap go down. I've only read hypotheticals, but haven't seen an actual swap done.
Here's at least one guy who's done it and seems happy with the result. I like the lower first gear, don't know if it's really what I'd call a granny gear, for starting out on hills and also I think reverse is a bit lower geared too? You must like yours in your SD?
And, I don't know that the swap is all that much harder and more expensive than a ZF5 swap.

Thanks for the link! I'll read it this eve. And yes, I LOVE my ZF-6. Hey, if it is no harder, do it! I'd even help if I lived closer. But yes, the LOW gear is akin to a granny, I think so anyways.

Same here!
Looks like if you stuffed gasser gearing in the Diesel case, you would have a pretty similar combo. I kinda like the idea of the near 3:1 second gear for normal starts.
I think some of it relates to your axle gearing as well. If you have 4:10s then the low gear probably isn’t that necessary. I have 3.55s. I would enjoy the lower gear. It would be like getting the best of both worlds. Easy starts with a big load and better cruising RPMs.
Oh hell, I forgot the ZF6 has a better OD ratio for cruise...but now you are getting into Gear Vendor territory. I really like that idea, OD on fourth for if I tow heavy and OD on fifth if unloaded.
The biggest problem I’m having with a ZF6 conversion is bellying up to the bar and paying the price. They ain’t cheap.
I can recover some of the cash by selling my old stuff, anyone got an idea what I might be able to get for a core E4OD and BW transfer case? The E4OD works, but I think the torque converter is on borrowed time.
I sold my old E4OD for 300, it was a 2wd though. Sold the TC off my parts truck for 150 to a friend, but I gave him a great deal at that price.
I usually look at ebay for a comparable part and post it at 75% lowest value I find. That usually gets the buyer and myself a good deal, and moves the part quicker than asking full price.
Jarrett, thanks. Your numbers are in the range I was thinking. I talked to a few transmission rebuilders about getting some sort of core credit for my E4OD on a ZF rebuild but they’re not interested.
Not sure if I should start a new thread. It seems to be a matter of opinion whether it's necessary to get a manual transmission ECU or get it reflashed to manual when switching from an E4OD. From what I've read one of the problems with the auto ECU with a manual clutch is that the throttle response when starting out is very aggressive and touchy. I'd also like to make sure the cruise control works OK. I think at least half the battle is getting the wiring harness connections figured out.
It looks like there are four options:
Keep the auto ECU
Reflash the auto ECU to manual
Replace the auto ECU with a manual ECU
Buy an add on chip that is set up for a manual transmission.
Right now I don't have any sort of add-on chip and it seems like it might be the way to go since I'd also get some performance options with it. I don't understand much about how chips work. Do they more or less completely over-ride the ECU or do they just over-ride certain parts of the ECU function like fueling? Over-ride might be the wrong word I really don't know much about how they work.
Any opinions on the pros and cons of buying a chip over replacing or reflashing the auto ECU?
Thanks.
