Its time to rebuild my E4OD. I'm having a trans shop rebuild it that my mechanic referred me to. He gave me a very fair price of $1200 for a stock rebuild however I have 150,000 miles on my stock tranny and this truck was taken care of. I want to put more than another 150,000 miles onto the rebuilt tranny. I don't tow with the truck currentlly but I want to down the line.
What should I be looking at upgrading? The shop owner told me there are two "update kits" for my tranny and that it'd be an additional $400. Should I do the update kit or stay stock?
On a side note, another diesel mechanic told me I should get a jasper unit. I think his interpretation is that it comes with a 75,000 mile warranty. Any thoughts on the jasper unit? I don't particularly like the idea of a jasper trans....just heard some bad things, but that's just what I've heard.
ALSO, is this means anything, this tranny is for a 4x4 diesel. As i said before I plan on keeping it for a long long time.
$1200 is too cheap for an overhaul on an E4OD unless that is only for the parts. There is about 12-15 hours of labor times the shop rate. A quality torque converter will cost $200-400. Back in the late 1990's I used to quote $2500 on a retail overhaul when shop rates were only $75 per hour.

The guy is a good friend of my mechanic. My mechanic is greek and if you know the greeks, they stick together like family. So this guy is giving me a so called break. I too am a little skeptical about the price however my mechanic builds race cars on the side and races them and uses this guy so I don't think he'd send me to someone who's bad. I'll be careful though. How should I go about looking for a reputable trans shop? I don't just want to drop my truck off at any old AA::crap crap::MCO shop. I plan on keeping her for a long time and if its gonna cost $2000 for a good tranny, then so be it i want it done right. I want my trans and motor to out last the body.
