ok well my trans has had a lot of issues this year so im thinking about rebuilding it myself being im laid off and funds are low.so how hard is it and do you guys have any suggestions?
I've rebuilt mine. Not too big of a deal but you will need to observe the correct end play measurements and clutch-pack measurements. If you've rebuilt other transmissions it shouldn't be too much trouble. I would get a good quality kit and do the updates that you need. I'm getting ready to rebuild mine again as its got another 200,000 on it. The first rebuild was at 150,000 caused by a broken torque converter. While you're at it I'd put a shift kit in it also. I think I'm going to go with the Transgo Tugger as I've heard allot of good comments about it. This whole process for me is just a rebuild of the entire power team. My 300 is beginning to loose oil pressure and in need of some attention so I figure I'll just go through the E4OD while I'm at it.
The fluid looks and smells fine, it only has maybe 2000 miles on it.i just changed it and it was still good when I did that.I'm kinda baffled.i figure if the clutch pack was going it wouldn't have made a difference by adjusting the fipl.then again I'm not well versed with transmissions
Good news on the fluid. I think I would try to get any trouble codes that might be stored, just in case. Or mayby try disconnecting the battery for 10min to clear any codes and see if any change.
I am wondering if there is a 5 speed transmission with the same bolt pattern and everything as the 4r100... I have a 2000 f350 with the 7.3 in it and id like something with a little smaller jumps between gears
What I have found is if you don't already have any of the parts, order a replacement pedal set from LMC. Its OEM so it will last or find one from a junkyard. Then order a rebuilt trans and pay the "no core fee" from somebody like Midwest Transmission or Allstate gear. Get the clutch hydraulics from Rock auto. Only buy OEM so it will last. Then you'll need a clutch, just about any will due but Southbend does have a very good clutch that can be tailored to your set up. Get the manual for your truck on dvd from ebay. The last part is up to you, you can get the driveshaft out of a junkyard or order one from Rockauto and that should about complete it. The ZF-6 is a better transmission then the ZF-5 and also has a pump and a cooler so be sure to flush the lines\cooler on your truck. I have both and the ZF-6 is a bit stouter although I would pull a load with either truck as the transmissions are both excellent. One thing you might consider is a Fast cooler. He sells on ebay and on his own site. It will keep that fluid cool in heavy pulls. The dependability of the ZF's over the auto's is night and day. A good pulling auto will run you a bunch of money, the last one I heard of, one of my buddies bought was over $6.5k with the converter and extra cooler. You'll pay close to that in total when doing the conversion, but in the end you'll have a much more durable and longer lasting setup. I haven't done a swap in a newer series truck so I'm not too sure if you'll need to swap ECU's or not. I know when I swapped one into a 94(small block version of the ZF-5) I had to swap computers for a manual computer. That's not too big of a deal though. Anyway if I can be of any help Just let me know.
PS. A couple of gotcha's. First be sure to order a clutch kit so you get a flywheel too. Second spend the extra for the hydraulics that are " precharged" as it won't need to be bled. If have drive shaft work done, replace all the u-joints. There is a place in Arkansas that sells pallatized kits and can get you all the parts for a swap. Its a junk yard named AmericanAutoWrecking.us.

No, there isn't. You could probably have an adapter made. But that begs the next question - how would you get the five speed to shift? All transmissions are computer controlled. Where would you find a computer to run it?
There are stand alone transmission controllers but they are expensive. I think GM sells them for some of their transmission offerings, maybe ford does the same?
I'd be very surprised if there were an aftermarket computer that could operate a 5R110W transmission. It is a complicated transmission to shift. I have never heard of Ford selling stand alone controllers.
