This truck is starting to tick me off..... Today I went out and truck gets up in high rpm before shifting out of 1st gear. When putting it in park/r/d or the shifting is just fine. No hard shifts. Its like it doesn't know how fast we are going to shift correctly... Anything I can diagnose?
I put in a different ECM out of a parts truck after I got home and it still does the same thing.
Its an AOD transmission. Where is this VSS located? I've read over past 30mins in pictures/forums/articles that its located on the side of the transmission/inside the transmission/rear axle. And what would I clean it with?
I changed out the tps. Had to pull it back apart cuz I set the voltage out of range. Still getting the shifting problem. Seems its 2nd going into 3rd. But most importantly........ If I a treat it like a manual floating gears with out pushing in the clutch. When it does it if I let up off the peddle and get back into it it shifts into the next gear.(SOMETIMES!)
Any my speedo is working and no abs light but it can still cause a fault with trans shifting issues?
Your AOD is not electronic controlled, it's mechanical. Check the TV cable to ensure it is properly set. Messing with the VSS is pointless for your issue. Same for the TPS.
FYI...the VSS is located on top of the rear axle.1992 was the first year for the electronic speedometer/odometer assembly and that's when Ford combined the VSS signal to provide feedback for the rear ABS (RABS) and the Speed/Odometer, computer and Speed Control functions.
Are you sure you have an AOD, what is the trans code on your drivers door pillar? The AOD can do that late shift thing but you would have had to mess with the TV cable to make that happen, it won't just start doing it out of the blue on its own. The E4OD and 4R70w on the other hand are 100% computer controlled and any sensor issue including an out of range TPS can cause the computer to make the trans do late shifts.
I checked the tv cable.... There is no slack in it that connects to the throttle body. Thats the only adjustment i got from that video. Any other ideas?
And 2ndly I have a same year and xlt parts truck only dif is the parts truck has an e4od trans. are they interchangable?
Yes the donor truck E4OD will physically fit. Since you have a donor of the same year the wiring changes should be fairly easy. If the donor truck also has a 5L engine then all you need to do is swap the computer into the original truck, same for the flexplate and torque converter. If the donor is a 5.8L engine then you need a different flexplate and computer. Other pieces such as shifter linkage, gear indicator, driveshaft can be swapped in from the donor.
Before tossing everything into the mix verify the TV cable is attached at the transmission end on this truck. Could be an easy fix.
TV cable is attached and working properly from my knowledge.
Your saying the torque converter/trans is interchangable.
Is the torque converters the same? (Such as if I pulled the torque converter from the donor truck e40d and put in the AOD)
Honestly I think its the torque converter due to the shuttering over past week and whining noise we heard when we lost drive pressure. Whats the chances its just the torque converter??
And there is no tv cable on the e40d just the shift linkage.

No, the transmissions are interchangeable. Meaning they will physically fit behind a small block Ford (and 4.9L 6 cylinder). You will need the associated wiring to run the electronic E4OD. Different torque converters.

See above answer re: torque converter

Yes I know that, I was referring to the shifter linkage/cable not the TV cable assembly.

It's either the TV cable, the governor or an internal failure in the transmission, such as a burnt clutch.

They are NOT interchangeable. It is possible to put the E4OD in the truck, but it sure isn't a bolt in swap.

No, that isn't possible. You cannot put an E4OD torque converter in an AOD.

The chances are about zero. If the torque converter were the problem it wouldn't move forward or backwards. The torque converter isn't involved with shifting.
