Exclamation ED04 Shifting Issues

I just bought a 95 F150 5.0 Auto ED04 Tranny. When the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd its a little hard in the shift, not a clunk or jerk, but not what i think is normal. Sometimes it shifts smoothly into 2nd but rare. Also if i am at a dead stop and i put the shifter into 2nd gear, it starts off in 2nd gear... IN AN AUTOMATIC? if i floor it, it will not kick down into 1st. This is my first for but any vehicle i had with an auto tranny never did this. Anyone with known issues, and any input would be greatly appreciated. The truck only has 49,000 miles on it. Im leaning towards the MLPS, or something else controlled to the tranny. The fluid is clean and was recently changed. Please help me out if you can.

Pull the codes first. This will tell you what is wrong. Since you bought it used the previous owner may have had a shift kit installed. There are ones that will allow manual selections and hold them through full rpm range.

Trannies shifting in second while the lever is in secodn is not unusual. Many cars have that as a feature to allow a smoother power flow to the rear in slick conditions. Not all trannies have this feature but many computers can be reprogrammed to do this.

As far as harsh 1-2 shifting could be lots of things including a shift kit, dirty fluid, bad seals, sticky valves etc. Check with the previous owner to see if he put in a kit.

If you can pull codes that would be a good start. Don't know if any codes are stored unless the OD light flashes which indicates a problem.

Also you might drop the pan, change fluid and filter etc and see what happens. With 49K on it, you are at a good mileage to do the fluid change any way. While the pan is off inspect for metal particles bigger than rice and also check to see how much clutch debirs is in the pan, looks like pepper flakes and should be less than maybe a teaspoon.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

I have a E40D and 1 to 2 is smooth as can be. Check codes. When I got my truck it had a hard shift and the code told me what was wrong.

If you put it in 2nd then it will start off in 2nd. Not sure I care. A friend has a chevy and when you put it in 2nd it will start off in 1st and shift to 2nd. It has some advantages when you want to hod rod it.
