This might be an option for you. The receiver I bought with a back up camera option on it is manually selected, not automatic. Which means that if I want to see the rear view camera, I go to a certain part of the screen and push the camera button.
This allowed me to wire the camera into an ignition power source so that the camera is always on, but the output is only viewed when I want it to be. This was key for me since I have a ZF6 manual truck and sometimes sit in neutral and want to see the camera view.
Support told me the wire was under hood.... I'd have to run a wire up there. There has to be a better way. I see a pink/black wire coming out of plug under dash that appears to be the shifter wiring harness, just wonder if that is the correct pink/wire I need to splice into. Any Thoughts ?
Storming here again.... so I may have to get off line due to lighting....
Have you considered tapping right off your back up lights at the rear? You would have to put it in reverse then though to make them work.
The camera itself is powered by the backup lights... that much I figured out. Directions call for another wire to be spliced into the shift REVERSE wiring.... a Black/Pink wire, that notifies the unit to display the video feed automatically when you put it in reverse... thats the wire I need to find.
Was hoping someone had installed one of these and knew when it was at.
I wired mine originally to the reverse lights just under the tailgate and taped into a ignition wire in fuse box for the monitor. I removed the power from the reverse lights and switched to a power switch on dash. Then I can turn camera whenever I want or need it on (on demand).
Edit. You need 2 power sources, 1) powers the camera only, the 2) powers the monitor. So using the reverse lights by tailgate will power the camera. The other powers the monitor which turns on when the camera powers up. My unit came with the RCA cable that already had a wire (red) running the length of the RCA cable. If you chose to power everything with a switch you use the red wire to provide 12v the camera instead of using the reverse lights. You can wire it for both the reverse lights AND a switch but you’re going to need to use a relay t prevent feedback into your trucks back lights.
The link below has some good information.
I know we're an easy going bunch here, and we refrain from telling people to use the search function (and I am not a search ****), but really, this question is so easily answered with a quick search of this forum using the term "backup camera"
Make a column, then label it "FWIW". Under that title, please feel free to insert the following:
I wired mine according to the instructions, and if I wasn't so lazy and/or busy - I'd rewire the whole thing to get camera on-demand instead of only with reverse. There are times when I just want to see what's going on back there, and maneuvering the trailer in a tight spot has the camera cutting out when I still want it up. I've had my camera for several years with many scenarios, and one of the most interesting situations is diagonal parking on a street. You can clearly see the traffic coming, even when you can't see squat out the window.
On-demand is the only way to go with a manual, and could serve very useful even in an automatic. It is kind of fun to be driving down the interstate and switch to the back up camera.
Wired my 10.00 unit with only the video rca running to the cab/monitor. Snagged my reverse wire from the 7 pin connector.. If i want to see whats behind me, i look in the rear view mirror..
