Wheeling in the Rockies: how to control temps

I'm an Oklahoma boy. We are 722ft above sea level. I'm now in Creede, Co at 8,799 ft. We went wheeling today and I'm working to adjust to the Altitude. I don't know what to expect.

My 2002 Excursion is running the 38r turbo and AIS. It's otherwise stock.

I wheeled up to 10,500ft today without OD. For the first time ever my transmission was at 220*.

My EOT was at 237*, but I keep the EGT's at 1100*.

We are here for a week on vacation and I plan several other day trips throughout our stay. What advice can seasoned veterans pass along?

Torque Pro boost reads negative most of the time...

thanks!

My trans temp is an issue during long slow climbs. I recently installed a 6.0 transmission cooler which should help but I haven't done anything to really test it out yet to see how much of a difference it makes. I usually pull over, take a break, and let the truck idle in PARK to cool it down when it gets to 210F and rising. One of my projects is to make the torque converter lockup circuit (from Guzzle's website) to see if that helps too.

You can run as high as 220°F all day long with no problems. You can go as high as 250°F for no more than a half hour at a time.

Downshifting to keep the RPMs higher will help with transmission temperatures. As a longer term solution changing your air to oil cooler to a cooler from a 6.0L F-Series would help a lot.

If you are offroad you can put the truck in 4 low to run at a higher RPMs at slow speeds. This may help.

Pretty sure it would help us solve your issues if you were to post several pics of the area. Wide angle panoramic views would be best for the most accurate diagnostics.

There is a bug in your Torque Pro boost formula... and I'll wager it as a "-BARO()" in there.

Today was another fun day. We headed over the Continental divide and Slumgullion Pass. Today I ran mostly in 2nd and 3rd gear on the ascent with the RPM's between 2300-2500.

EGTs averaged 900*
EOT peaked at 218
Tranmission maxxed at 190* and fell

I had to take the decent in either 1st or 2nd gear so I didn't over heat the breaks. We coasted down Slumgullion at 18 mph in 1st on the 7% grade.

It was a super fun adventure.

Today was a great day. Thanks to the suggestions of everyone here at FTE, we successfully completed some "Jeep only" roads by accident. My navigator told me "Right" when I should have gone "Left.

Thankfully I only met one Jeep going the opposite direction and we were able to let them pass. I made it up in 2wd thanks to my Trutrac rear differential. That thing is amazing!

My 20' Ex struggled with the switch back turns but we did it anyway. We took another jeep road that hugged the mountain in 4 low, wow these trucks hook like a tank. The entire trip all temps were in check. EGT's never topped 900*, EOT and Trans never topped 212*.

I was unable to get any pics of the truck in action, but I'm sure proud of her and the trail she pulled off. I do have one pic of the evening sunset as it crosses the mountains...

thank you all, I've never put my truck through such paces, now I can't wait to do it again and again!

I have ordered a 6.0 Trans cooler to install when I get back to Oklahoma.

Congratulations and good luck. My best and most favorite places I've been were found by accident.

By the way... I'm a bit of a photographer, and I must say - good job on the pictures!

This is very true, don't get too scripted when traveling for pleasure and leave plenty of time for exploring new places.

Rich,

You are correct.

PIC: 221440
(((A*256)+B)*0.03625)-BARO()

Looking at some bookmarks I found you 2016 link:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...nd-others.html

Boost
(AKA Manifold Gauge Pressure)
Short Name: Boost
PID: 221440
Units: PSI
Max/Min: 30.0/0.0 (stock) 40.0/0.0 (performance)
Equation: (((A*256)+B)*0.03625)-[221442]
"-[221442]" subtracts the Barometric sensor (located on the PCM on some trucks, external on others) reading from the MAP reading - and this gives you just the boost pressure above atmospheric pressure.

I'll give this a try and see what happens. I think I tried this and it didn't return anything. Do you I include the brackets [ ]? I'll report back.

Update: I've edited the Equation and Boost went to 0.0 at idle as it should. I see how it performs on our trip to the 4 corners tomorrow.

update 2: after 800 miles I can confirm the new boost formula works great. Thanks Rich
