Motorized bicycle project
I was thinking and worrying about chain alignment on this with this hub. Then I started thinking I need to verify by asking Don Grubee but I believe the frames 135mm and 150mm are all the same from the welded engine mounts to the bottom brackets. I think the only difference is the drop out in the rear. If this is true then this hub I should assemble like the paper work says and just simply center it in the rear and everything should line up chain wise.
The disc brake how ever will be another thing as the difference between a 135mm and 150mm drop out is 15mm which is 0.59". Then the hub is aligned on a 135mm frame with 7 washers to allow 13mm which is 0.50" space between the rotor and the bike frame. So if I simply center the axle if my quick math in my head is right centering the axle will result in a 0.295" more gap on each side of the hub which with a 0.50" space will translate into 0.795" gap on the left side of the frame.
I am not liking this last part of the math but I do feel confident that I am looking at roughly .30" wider gap on each side of the axle nuts.
Another update is I sent an email to Niagara Bicycles asking them if I can cancel my tire order as that was $24 for two tires and another $28 for shipping and I see now it still hasn't been shipped out yet and it says 4 to 5 days shipping meaning it will take them 4 to 5 days to ship it out. I told them in my email that its unacceptable that I pay $28 for shipping and it takes you 4 to 5 days to ship out two parts that cost $24. Then by time I get them almost 2 weeks go by but yet I bought two wheel assemblies and paid $30 shipping cause the box weighed in around 14 lbs and it left Wisconsin first thing Thursday and I received it today.
I also took my hub to work and did some measurements my math indicates I will need 17mm worth of spacers on each side of the hub to center it on the frame. This puts my brake rotor hub at 15.60mm away from the plane of my drop out. This means that if the rotor is 1mm thick the rotor should be 14.60mm from my frame which is 1.60mm more than what the paper says to have which is 13mm space between the rotor and the frame.
I originally planned $1000 or less. Right now I am currently at $774.26 including for the tires and wheels. Only thing left I have to really buy is nit picking stuff. I did email Niagara to cancel my order with any luck if they do cancel it I think I can get the tires from Bike Tires Direct while the tires are $17.59 a piece vs $12.00 I am sure the shipping will be less and they offer price matching from other sites.
But parts I have left to buy is the engine, hand grips, pedals, crank assembly, seat and seat tube, fenders, chains and brakes. I probably will be around $1500 by time I am finished which I don't think is that bad considering this is my first build and mistakes were made. I bet the second one I could build for less as I would go with a 135mm frame vs the 150mm so I wouldn't have to go so crazy on finding special parts.
But even at $1500 though its still cheaper than $2500 and it was done right vs the one pictured in my first post that has horrible coaster brakes on the rear only and what appears to be autozone off the shelf paint.
Cool project you have going here.
Here's the picture log of the bike I did a couple years ago.

Aside from that I see you went with the aged look which looks good. I think I am worrying too much myself as trying to be a perfectionist that I keep getting upset with how things are turning out.
Like for example I took the frame from the hanging rack today after a week of hanging and I removed the masking tape and I noticed the rear down tubes appear to be duller than they were before but flashes and the light does show some shine. I am just going to cut my losses on this as Ive used 4 cans of clear on the frame alone trying to get a nice even sheen. I'm just going to pull out my polisher and white 3M polish pad and try to buff it up some and leave it alone.
Little update here is late but I have some new photos that I haven't had the time to share till now.
61mm HD Grubee Axle
Secondary Fork reassembled
New wheel set
My tires still haven't shipped they emailed me back that they canceled my order like I requested of them since I refuse to pay $28 shipping for $24 worth of tires that they still hadn't shipped out on Saturday morning after I ordered them on Wed. Their website still lists my order as awaiting fulfillment so I cant order other tires as I don't want to end up with 4 sets of tires.
I still haven't heard from ICycle where I dropped my rear wheel and my HD axle off at Saturday morning to have it swapped in. Probably will be Wed maybe as late as Friday.
How ever I am in a dilemma right now as my 44T drive sprocket for the engine is a silver color and I am now wondering if I should cancel my idea for a black crank and chain ring for a chrome/silver setup. Or if I should mix it up with black crank with a silver/chrome chain ring. Or just stick with my plan and run black on black and just have the rear 44T drive sprocket as silver/chrome.
I could also take and shoot it with some black paint but I don't know.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Only thing I have left to really buy is as follows.
Twist throttle and pair of grips
clutch lever
dual cable brake lever
seat post
saddle
two chains
engine
bottom bracket kit
crank and ring gear
freewheel sprocket
tubes
fenders (not sure which ones to get still)
fuel shut off valve
That should be it. Most expensive items on this list left is the engine and the saddle. Aside from that everything else is under $50 a piece.
WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG YOU'RE KILLING ME!!
Seriously, great thread and really cool bike you're putting together. How is it titled or licensed, it doesn't need to be based on engine size or somesuch?
One guy down here at the university up in Dallas I think it was or it might have been Austin few years back he got a ticket from a cop for like 6 infractions ranging for no registration/license, no insurance, no windshield headlight turnsignals brake light, etc. He went to the DMV and they wouldn't register it as it was a bicycle and not a motor vehicle. I found out just like he did that the law hasn't changed and that those at the state level are just letting each county deside how they want to handle it.
Personally I am just going to use it as is and if I get trouble I will claim its a 49cc engine under the 50cc limit and that its not a moped or scooter as there is no deck.
