Take it to Autozone or someplace like that and have them load test the battery. I would think the battery should not make the truck stall out, or blinkers stop working. Bad grounds can make that happen.
had the battery tested over my break and it was less than 1/2 of what it should be. Possibly dodged a bullet! New battery installed. The old one was 3 years old......and had been through the fire. I hate problems you can't make reproduce themselves. Like. Ghost hunt. I'll see on the way home this afternoon. Isn't there a large braided ground wire on the motor I can check?
I have a large braided ground strap from the engine to the fire wall. I don't think its OEM. I think the OEM straps are battery cable style. Also neg battery cable to block. I don't think you could ever have too many ground straps.

Now that you have your base timing set, try to advance her a little bit more. Use you ear. Too much advance and she'll drag when you go to start her again. There's more to tell you using a vacuum gauge, but you're on the right track. She still falls on her face and first throttle. A far cry from the beginning of the burn out. I don't know that carb. I can tell you to adjust the rear float by the nut and screw on the back bowl. Loosen the nut and adjust the screw (while it's running) to get the fuel in the sight glass, BUT that is not why she falls on her face at a bump of the throttle. Again, great job on getting her this far in a short amount of time.
Don't get discouraged. It's part of the fun or education in this circumstance.

Alrighty, I had that new battery installed today and Black Thunder ran like a champ the entire way home. It's a 30 minute ride starting on the Interstate for a few miles, then stop and go for about 10 miles, then wide open for a few more miles. No issues, didn't act like it even thought about cutting off. Weird, I know. Must have been the battery. So stoked!

I finally got the new-to-me Summit carb (same model as the burned up unit) installed and she purrs like a kitten. I did find out that the wire the previous owner had run to the electric choke does not have 12V to it.....jeez-ow-PETE! What a mess. So I'll need to find me that 12V to set the choke right.I had to keep turning down the fast idle it was way to high and i'm completely off the idle screw on the other side. The springs seem to be just right. Right now I have the fast idle set about 1100 and curb idle at 800. I'm thinking that's sounds about right. If not, please let me know I'm jacked up! LOL!

Hey Brian, just below this post some guys said you have some good info on repairing rust on your truck. I tried to find where you have the thread but you have so many posts, I just can't find it. Do you have a link?
My truck was shipped to Atlanta right from the factory in February 1970 and she's been here ever since. Pretty good body wise. There aren't any repairs like Brian has to deal with....and I AM THANKFUL!
So I had the truck lay down again tonight. Running fine and then the lights went dim and boom. DRT. A jump start and boom! right back in business. I have isolated the issue to the lighting circuit. I have driven the truck a ton since the fire and new battery and it has been great; except tonight. it's the first time I ran it hard at night. My son and I were out and talking about how fast "Black Thunder" is. She IS a 6.4 Liter V8!! after all. anyway, we stopped for gas, left it running while filling it up. When I pulled out of the gas station, the lights appeared a little dim, I hit the brights, and it didn't do much good. then boom; she layed down. After I got a jump (the first of 3 required to get her home) I ran without the lights and it was fine, as soon as I'd kick the lights on there was a little bit of "drag" on the motor then she wanted to quit. I ran it with the lights off most of the way, but at the stop lights/stop signs, I had to turn them on. That's when she'd cut off. There was no smell of overheating or burning wiring (I'm familiar with how that smells! LOL!). The lights go dim and then she cut out. Any ideas? Guess I need to start a new thread on the old girl.....dealing with electrical! Thanks for your help!
