Shari and I took off yesterday after dinner for a craigslist run to Durham.
This guy had been trying to sell these items for a while, and wanted pretty good money for them, well more than I wanted to pay.
A week ago he relisted the items, free to get them gone. I emailed several times, and he finally called me yesterday evening. All are in great shape, I offered to pay something, but he just wanted them to have a good home. This stuff had been in his garage for 17 years, since he sold his 78 & 79 F150.
Portsmouth Island was fantastic. The cabins were what we expected. Two big rooms each with a kitchen and bunks, minus a refrigerator. Had to lock the vehicles in 4wd right after getting off the ferry. The Jeep did fantastic and the F150 had very little problems. The 89 crew cab Dually though, ended up needing a tow. Once when we tried to visit the abandoned village. The road, which is normally flooded was really flooded thanks to Bonnie, and the dually took in some water to the intake and dizzy. Sent the jeep down to drag it back to dry land where we dried out the dizzy and cranked that old 454 up. It blew quite a bit of water out of the exhaust. However, must not have gotten too much in the engine, since we didn't get any damage there.
Then right as we were ready to leave the Dually decided to conk out again. So the jeep dragged it on to the Ferry and Lucille dragged it off. two hours later and some connections cleaned and it cranked up. Lucille was the only vehicle that did the trip on one tank. Thanks to Bonnie again and the pressure changes the fish weren't biting.

It really depends what you are into and what you want to do. Sight see? Fish? Put the old truck in four wheel drive? Good Restaurants? History? I've got tons of recommendations up and down the coast. This particular time I took a group out to the North Core Banks. From Raleigh, it's about a 4 hour drive, plus an hour on a private ferry. Amenities include: cabins, some with heat some with A\C. Generator for power, no fridge, but hot water. Or you can opt to camp on the sand, but it's all only four wheel drive accessible, and dragging a large camper out there is not an option. Slide-in truck campers or tents.
I tend to look for the remote, out of the way places. I'm not for the crowds, or the street fairs, the bars or traffic. So that's why I picked this particular island. The round trip ferry for the Jeep and Truck was around 260, and the cabins were around 180 a night per cabin.
Anything we forgot, we lived without, like dish soap. :/
hmm..that might be to rustic for my family. I have one 16 year old girl that needs to be seen at that the beach..lol shes not all that into wilderness and as far as my wife, she kind of the same. History is always good as i can goat them into going and doing some sight seeing..not a huge fan of skyscraper/resort type of places but not averse to it. the other two rather prefer something like that but i can usually talk them into a rental or something, even if its not on the beach but something within walking distance. I know nothing about nc coast line..

OBX may be a bit too out of the way for you, though on some of the northern beaches there is a lot more civilization, but still not what I would consider commercial. For that I would probably go to Wrightsville or further south like Myrtle. Lot more activities to do and be seen doing. I have never done the resort type places so can't help you there. If you want to try OBX, I'd suggest Nags Head. Check out the Wright Museum, restaurants and such. Plenty of opportunities to keep everyone entertained.
Shari's 08 Escape is officially finished. I was able to get a good coat of wax on it this morning. I really wish I'd thought of taking close up pictures of the surface of the paint before I ever touched it with the clay bar, and then after the wax.
It's truly a different vehicle, that paint had something on there literally for years. And washing it never fazed it one bit.
Now on for some craigslisting. (Imagine that) I'm wanting to take a laptop with us while we're on our trip. Obviously for some craigslisting when were back home for a while, and then in Tennessee for a few days. And FTE, Facebook stuff. Shari and I each have our own computers in the house, and Tim has a laptop that we got him for Christmas last year. But I just want one that has no problem, and mostly just going on line, and has a decent sized screen. I made sure each place we have rented does have wifi.
