GOOD MORNING NORTH CAROLINA!
I hope everybody has a safe Memorial Day Weekend, but remember why we have this holiday.
Thanks you to all of the Men and Women that have and are currently serving this great nation.
I'd also like to extend this to our Firefighters, Police, EMT's First Responders etc.
Me and the wife are about to head out on the bike to check out a local "moonshine distillery" I just learned about a couple weeks ago! Then gonna swing back by the local metric bike shop so the wife can try on some new helmets... and maybe me too... lol.
Happy Memorial Day to all you vets out there. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. After working on the truck this morning, we packed up the wife's vw beetle and went exploring in the highlands, nc area. What a beautiful part of the country. I thought asheville was pretty. Hwy 64 coming from brevard, nc all the way to highlands, nc..damn!! You talk about a windy beautiful road for almost 3 hours one way. Amazing scenery. I will say this is a must do on a bike for sure. Hwy 64 is known as the land of the waterfalls. I now know why. Hundreds of them. Hwy 64 goes through sapphire (golf course resort capital of the planet, in the mountains), it then goes on towards cashiers (quaint little tourist trap arts and crafts mountain town) and then onto highlands (another arts and crafts rich folk resort town)" we continued our trip onto Franklin nc and looped back through the nantahala forest and the river. Stopped by the dragon (lady had always wanted to take her supped up vw beetle turbo down this road). She Did really well and the that little car is like a go cart on rails, it has great turn in and is snappy, she had us flying all over the place..lol. We then headed back through Bryson city, Cherokee and took the brp back to AVL and home. Nine hour trip but it was a beautiful day, low 80's and not a cloud or drop of rain the whole day. We are cooked though and wupped. Time for an adult beverage of two and off to bed. Doing the passenger side trim on the dent in the morning. Have a great weekend gents.
Distillery was decent, they do a tasting and had 3 flavors. A dark corn whiskey that was around 88 proof, their carolina moonshine that was a 100 proof, and a apple pie that was 30 proof. I was suprised since I had bought a 750 ml jar of Tim smith's (off the show moonshiners) and wasn't impressed, but this stuff was much better than that. It wasn't as smooth as some that has showed up locally over the years, but still decent.
I have an Apple Pie recipe that will leave you where ever your setting. It's a sipper without a doubt.
We're hitting the moonshine distillery that's in Gatlinburg "Smoky Mountain Moonshine" while we're there in a few weeks. Been there before, and tasted everything that they had. As long as your 21 your set.
Out of the two places we're staying at, that is the place that I'm more excited to see. Who wouldn't be.
Gatlinburg/pigeon forge/siveirville area is awesome. We go over there about once a month for wifey to go shopping at the outlet mall over there. Lots of trouble to get into over there as well..lol
It's like myrtle beach in the mountains. Love the go kart tracks and all the stuff that makes you feel young again..lol
Going to have to much fun..the green monster of envy is coming out..haha

Love a good shine. The distillerys here in AVL and over in gatlinburg have smooth shine but it's all really really sweet. I'm from Germany and I remember being a young man and us all making our own cherry and grape schnapps (same thing as American shine). My relatives still send me some from time to time. Next time we all have a monthly dinner together and I can make it, I'll bring some cherry schnapps I have and let you see how the Germans do it. Very smooth, very high in alcohol..lol
A buddy of mine here in town still makes his own shine, a peach shine..omg, it is too good. It's def a sipper though. It has been known to cause temporary blindness when too much is consumed..lol. He has a still on his back porch and everything, it's fascinating to see him make it.

Sign me up for a couple of those
Yes I'm dead serious.

We hit them up, and another one just down the street from them when we were down there for our honeymoon!
Made a few improvements to the chicken pen today. Added mulch to the floor to keep it from turning into a mud hole everytime it rains. Also made a new water bucket for them so I don't have to refill the water every day.
Did someone say shine...never touched the stuff myself.
Larry, your birds are looking good. You will enjoy them. I've had them since I was 9 years old although now i'm winding it down and getting out of it. My latest venture was working on the Heritage Rhode Island Reds(the real ones, not the fakes at the hatcheries). With my back problems and my feed bill exceeding $500.00 a month it was time to let someone else take over.
You are fortunate to be able to use regular chicken wire. I had to use hardware cloth and electric fencing around the pens due to the wild critters around here.
Be Good folks!
Happy Memorial Day and thanks to all who served...past and present!
