For the reasons you are giving in regard to excessive EGT's, am considering water/methanol injection. I ran one on my 07 6 liter and it helped, not as much as advertised maybe, but it did help on the long grades under a heavy load. I was happy keeping it at anything less than 1200F. It kept the dreaded EOT below 220, where before it routinely would go to 245. Water temp didn't get above 220, this was with a slightly modified FICM from Ed, with the 80hp Atlas tune.
I've seen an article in one of the diesel mags that had done a Water /meth install on a 6.7 engine. I can't remember what brand. Mine was Snow Performance, I'll be using them again, I felt it was a quality product. It also gave a nice little uptick in power as well on that 6L.

That's an excellent idea!
I haven't had a problem with EGT temps on my 550. It must be all that extra power in the pickups.
I wrestled with the 450 versus 350 decision too back in January when I ordered my new dually. In my case I sometimes have a lot of weight in the box and if you chack the cargo carrying capacity of a 350 dually with the max tow option it is about 1,200 pounds more than a 450. Therefore I think a 450 weighs around 1,200 pounds more than the 350. Odd but although the 450 can tow around 3,500 pounds more it's cargo capacity is less.
I ordered the 350 dually with the max tow option and can't wait to pick it up tomorrow morning at 0900.
I was still second guessing my choice a couple of weeks ago and asked my dealer about switching to a 450 and he told me Ford was out of 19.5" wheels so you better get your order in.
I stuck with the 350 and I am sure it will do a great job for me.
Lauren, If I was not needing all that I can get weight wise, I would go with the F350 wide track. I am going to guess that the resale will be better for the F350 as well. I have got to sell my winch truck before I buy or else capitol gains tax will ugly.
I read about you guys heading out with the fiver's and dammit man, that sounds like a blast.
For the weight you are wanting to tow I think you are making the right move going with the 450 Barney. I have a bumper pull triple axle dumping trailer I haul my Kubota in with a GVW of 21,000 and a fifth wheel toy hauler with a GVW of 20,000 so the max tow 350 rating of 26,500 is plenty for me. I have a neighbour that has a 450 and he really likes the bigger brakes on it. He hauls cars w for a living with his and drives about 100K miles per year.
I hesitated on the max tow option because I didn't want the 4.30 axle ratio but after reading the comments in this thread I am going to give it a try. My mechanic tells me he can put 3.73 gears in the front and rear diffs for about $2,000 Canadian. He also suggested going to larger tires.
I am going to drive her as she is for the summer and then decide if I need to make changes.
Do ya mean like this? This was the night before I pulled the trigger. They (the dealer) said take it home to see if it matches your 5th wheeler?
That's all it took for my wife. The rest is history.

WOW! That's what I'm talking about.
You guys are killin me.
Barney,
This truck is equipped with the 14K GVW, hence the "wide track" front axle.
I have not taken it to the scales yet, but I'm willing to bet what was said earlier about actual cargo carrying capability, the F350 with that option can haul more cargo.
I get it, I get it, the F450 has bigger brakes, axles, rims and tires, hence it can tow more. Although I submit, the 14K max trailer tow package is not far off that mark. Were I hauling commercially and near max GCWR all the time, I'd opt for the F450. We took a ride in one empty though and that was all it took for us to opt for the F350. the 19.5 G rated tires were a bit harsh.
Best of luck with your new F450, can't wait to see it.
I hope that I can find one of each to test drive before I order. I am getting long in the tooth and may have to give up a little weight to ride a little smoother.
By the way, I will be getting King Ranch like yours. I like the lower accent paint.
Please keep me posted..
