There is the FTE Lady........
Good morning/afternoon to ya Crystal.....
Jolly Green and the Monster (5th wheel) are getting ready for a summer of travel through Canada and Alaska.......
wire is there going by the block heater plug passenger side
Might want to relocate the fog light harness.
This last winter my plastic attached to the bottom of the bumper came off on a snow bank.
the wiring harness for the fogs is attached to the little lip on the bottom of the bumper.
So I unhooked it and ran it over the piece that is right in front of the radiator. I think that is a piece of felt. I attached the harness on each side with tie downs plus the felt should keep it up to where it should have been in the first place.
Mark, I am just about ready to order my truck. I am torn between the f450 and the f350 wide front and 4:30's. How are you liking the 4:30's and the wide front end? I am going to order a white KR. Any input that you would share with me would be greatly appreciated.
That is one awesome ride that you have.
Thanks, Barney
Barney,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
We also looked hard at the F450, but decided on the F350 with the 4.30's (partof the max trailer tow package with wide track front axle). The deciding factor was the Load Range G tires. We do enough driving in this without a max load or empty that would necessitate the higher capacity tires and 19.5 rims. It came down to a balance of empty ride vs max load we would haul when hitched to our 5r. Our 5r comes in at about16-16.5K. Were we hauling something more substantial that would take us into the F450 capability, we would have ordered one.
I like the 4.30 gears so far. Plentyof pull from a dead stop will IMHO save the transmission in the long run, as we plan to spend a significant amount of time towing our 5r when I retire soon. Yes it revs a bit hard at 75 (2400-2500 rpm); I don’t have a good mileage to give yet as I simply have not done the calculation yet, as I have been out driving and enjoying the heck out it.
Regards,
Mark

Reason: spelling, what else?
Mark, thanks for the info. I am probably going with the F450, as I don't want to come up a little short on weight capacity when the DOT shows up.
I have been trying to find out how much lighter the wide track F350 is than the F450. If there is very much difference then I may go with the 350.
Dang decisions! I agree totally with you about the 4:30 gears making it easier on the drivetrain. I will probably hardly ever drive over 65 mph, as I am getting a little long in the tooth and not in a hurry any more. And that will save a little on fuel. I was looking at another thread and there is someone with a f450 and he changed his tires from 225/70r/19.5 to 265/70R/19.5. The 265's are 2 inches taller than the 225's. That would probably be like changing the gear ratio to about 4:18??? The only bad is that they require 7.5" wide wheels those are about 320.00 per copy.
I think I am spending way to much time thinking and need to start getting my order together. Barn.

You must have really given it hell to get that thing off. I tried pretty hard to knock mine off this year and failed. I did have much less mud on the front diff though.............
Finally gave mine a well needed bath and installed the new tonneau cover adapters for the headache rack. Just need the cover now.
4 lo is required sometimes These DRW's just sit a little too low.
I managed to get mine stuck, but just on ice. 4Lo wasn't helping my problem. Sunk through the snow to the ice underneath. Took a bunch of digging, boards, chains, tractor with a plow and about 3 hours to finally get it out. Backed down a hill on the snow and it sank when I tried to make a turn. I didn't manage any pictures because I was pretty pissed at that point. Had to chain up the 2wd tractor loaded with weights and calcium to get it up the hill. Conditions were bad.
I think I will need to go with the 4:30 gears for the kind of weight that I will be pulling. I live in Oklahoma and am planning to stay within 400 miles of home which is mostly pretty flat so I may be able to get by with 3:73 if it will let me register for enough weight. My gross weight will be around 38k.
Ok. So I've followed your debacle a little bit. I was in your boat about a year ago.
Just two things you may or may not have considered.
1) You may have trouble finding a gooseneck or 5th wheel rated for 30k#'s that will fit that truck.
2) I would say definatly go with the 4.30 R&P, with that much weight you will want the engine and exhaust braking doing to most it can for you. Also I've experienced the EGT cutting power on long grades even with a '13 F-450 (4:30 R&P) I was driving for a company out if NH. So it won't matter how much power you have with 4:10's, it will feel like it has 350 hp once the EGT's get too high.
If you keep the speed @ 65 MPH or below and the height of your load under 7' you can expect what I feel is excellent fuel mileage.
I hope I don't come off as criticizing you. Just trying to save a fellow Ford man a possible regret.

Thanks for the input Steve. The gooseneck that I am planning to order is a PJ trailer with dual 15k axles with air ride. Probably 32' or 35' of deck. I will be hauling primarily gas compressor engines. I have been hauling the complete compression units for 34 years and it is time to sell the Peterbilt and downsize. Getting old is not for the weak.
Hey, thanks for the input I appreciate it.

For the reasons you are giving in regard to excessive EGT's, am considering water/methanol injection. I ran one on my 07 6 liter and it helped, not as much as advertised maybe, but it did help on the long grades under a heavy load. I was happy keeping it at anything less than 1200F. It kept the dreaded EOT below 220, where before it routinely would go to 245. Water temp didn't get above 220, this was with a slightly modified FICM from Ed, with the 80hp Atlas tune.
I've seen an article in one of the diesel mags that had done a Water /meth install on a 6.7 engine. I can't remember what brand. Mine was Snow Performance, I'll be using them again, I felt it was a quality product. It also gave a nice little uptick in power as well on that 6L.

Your welcome Barn.
Good choice, PJs are nice trailers. That one sounds especially nice.
Sorry, I was a little vague. I meant the hitch itself. I don't think I've ever seen a hitch to fit the factory mounts rated above 26,000#'s.
Anyway happy trucking!
