I think I will need to go with the 4:30 gears for the kind of weight that I will be pulling. I live in Oklahoma and am planning to stay within 400 miles of home which is mostly pretty flat so I may be able to get by with 3:73 if it will let me register for enough weight. My gross weight will be around 38k.

The optimal truck to for my situation would be an F350 4wd CC long bed with with the WIDE TRACK front end with a 3.73 axle ratio. I know, it's not made, but would really be an awesome upgrade to the turning radius!!!

I wish they would offer a 4:10, I would be all over it. That is a big jump from 3:73 to 4:30.

With that much weight you would be better off with the 450.

I am looking hard at changing my gears to 4.10's. Just not sure what changes if any would need to be made in the computer.

3.73 is good for over 22K on a F350 DRW.

I don't think the computer would be a problem, but you would probably need to have Ford to do the work to keep warranty. I am going to ask someone at the Ford shop before I order. The 450 has a different rear end than the 350 and I don't know if a 4:10 aftermarket is available for it. The f350 does not have enough gvw for the weight that I will be hauling and the DOT is watching that really these days on commercial loads.

I agree......not much room in the tool box...
I wanted a fuel tank of about 90 gals that would fit under my Tonneau cover. Hard to find......The tank / tool box wasn't much more. I am finding the tool box, shallow as it is, handy.....

DONE...........

Wide Track

Hands down I'd take wide track. It turns five feet tighter and it handles so much better loaded. Especially in cross winds.

My '15 srw with 3.55s gets 7 and the drw with 4.30s gets 8 pulling 19k lb toy hauler. Empty they get 15 and 13.5. Ready to trade the srw for a dually. This is my first drw and its amazing. I put 19.5s and larger DH01 Hankooks on it and it carries the weight awesome. My teenage boys in the backseat are amazed at how much less floaty it feels.

You'll notice the 4.30s big time when u hit big grades in the rockies on a roadtrip.

FYI my '15 srw gets 2mpg less empty than my '13 did. Big turbo probably.

Thanks for that info. I don't see how I can get around getting the F450 for my application unless I decide to haul smaller loads. With the F450 I will be more versatile with the higher GVW. I called a Ford dealership Saturday and spoke with a salesman about ordering a f450 and he asked if I wanted single rear wheels or dually. I also asked him about the F350 heavy wide front with 4:30 gears and he said that Ford did not offer such an application and the only to get a F350 dually was with a 4:10. This was at Vernon Ford in Vernon, Texas and that is just about all they sell is trucks. Moving right along.

When you heard a 450 srw, it was time to find another dealer!

RIGHT ON! My first question to this guy was how long does it take to get a truck after it is ordered. His response was 1k down and good credit. I told him that was not my question. And it went south from there. I told him that he would be better advised to study up on what he is trying to sell to make a living and listen up on the questions that he is being asked.
