Nice setup there Andrew! How long was it from start to pulled out?
About 8 hours of wrench time. I started saturday @ 830 and didnt actually get working until about 1030 by the time i got the plastic cut and tapped all everything else. Had dinner planned with some friends, so stopped at 5, and ended up pulling it out about 930 on sunday morning. I went slowly, put parts away in the attic at I went, this is my first time removing a 7.3, so yea just kinda took my time.
Im gonna ask your guys opinion/experience real quick here. My exhaust manifold bolts on a whole look pretty good. The drivers side are all in good shape, passenger side are good except for about 3, which arnt bad, but they arnt not-rusty either..
Im tempted to replace these 3 bolts. The exhaust manifolds do not currently leak, so I dont really want to take them off. But I would like to try to get these 3 out so they all look pristine going back in. Do you guys think I could just remove one at a time a replace them that way without disturbing the seal? The three I would like to replace are in the middle of the manifold, not at the either end.
I'll just be super mad one of them decides to break in 10000 miles when the motor is back in the truck
I would replace them. They don't have a seal unless someone put it in
I just mean the seal they have made with the block. I know there is no gasket, I just mean they are good right now, dont want to mess with a good thing.
Ah, well thank you for asking! It is coming slowly. I have sent off HPOP to Joey and Injectors went off this morning. A lot of money has left the account . Other than that, I have spent some time installing ARP head steads removing oil rail end plugs, trying unsuccessfully to pull the oil cooler apart, and cleaning the engine up for paint. I do have some pictures, but waiting for a substantial update to load them.
I am waiting on some parts I ordered from Clay @ Riffraff. I had ordered some parts and wanted to rent his injector cup tool at the same time, but unfortunately he did not have one in as of early last week. So I said just to wait until he gets one back and ship it all at once. He welcomed a baby this weekend, so I think things are a bit jumbled there at the moment. Once I get that package, it'll be full steam ahead with injector cups, valve springs/seals, replacing a few bolts and seals, then putting everything back together. Should have some stuff to show soon enough.
PS. How are you guys getting these oil coolers apart. Mine was not leaking or anything, but I bought a rebuild kit for it. It's tighter than a bulls a** in fly season, dont know how to separate with my limited tools .

I usually use a large rubber mallet or a block of wood and a mini sledge on the end caps. I usually have to smack them pretty hard to get them off. Going back together is going to be another small battle. I usually stack up some wood blocks on the ground so I can stand the cooler up straight and push down on the other end cap. I can usually push both end caps on at the same time doing that. There was one time that I needed a friend to help me push down before it finally snapped together.
To pull apart I put the cooler in a vice and smacked it with a mallet. To put it together I mounted the one side to the motor and sucked the other end in with a ratchet strap. Worked like a charm.
