So the collector and the up-pipes both have to have the same size V-band on them IOT to use the v-band clamp correct? I wonder if the stock collector could be ground up and modified to do the swap? Then attach a T4 adapter plate...

If you want to use a v band the you have to use two parts welded to the pipes and the mating clamp.

. the OE collector is at an angle, the stock up pipes need bellowed and a pedestal has to be built anyway..the stock parts are not any use...except the scrap heap.

OK quick update,

Was able to make it out to a good friend's house who is gracefully helping me out with the welding on these pipes. If you saw some of the previous pictures, its goes without saying I left him more than a little contamination and booger tack welds to deal with. But, he did a awesome job with it, and we got the first side welded out so that I can finish fitting the second side.

We aired on the side of caution and he laid down a lot of material. I/we kinda preferred to see larger welds..

This was the nastiest gap I was worried about before hand...

"grinding the crack"

So that is that. I couldnt be happier with how it turned out. I was a little discouraged with how the fitment was shaping up, but after seeing it all get made solid and sealed up, I'm far more confident in it. Unfortunately for my buddy, the limiting factor was having to deal with all my enormous flux core tack welds. They would really wreck havoc with the arch, not fun. But it sure is solid, good penetration into the 1/2inch plate, all good!

More picture later if I get around to something today.

I wouldn't have bought the Turboinetics mount either. I was determined to build my own. I just posted that pic as a visual for the v-bands. I have the v-bands connectors now, and as soon as I get time, I'm gonna build another one to see how it will work.

That looks great Andrew! Those are some solid looking welds for sure. Your buddy looks to be pretty good with a TIG!

I don't think I'd buy the whole mounting kit either, but if you could buy just the cast collector piece, it would make this a whole lot easier.

Interested too see how this goes Bill. No doubt would be nice to have them.

Yes I think considering all the crap and contamination I left for him to deal with, it was an excellent job. Its not easy welding then tube to 1/2 inch plate and getting appropriate penetration on the plate without blowing away the tube.

The cast collector would be awesome to have. But considering how much an intake Y goes for, I can't imagine the collector would be cheap

Hey guys,
Bringing this up without any fresh pics unfortunately. But wanted to inquire about valve spring compressors... Does anyone have a valve spring compressor that works on the 7.3 they would be willing to rent out to someone like me? Or do you have a reasonable alternative for a DIY valve spring job/tool? This rotunda tool Im seeing around is pretty cost prohibitive, there are other valve spring compressor tools available through places like summitracing, but I dont know that they would work on 7.3's... Would gladly rent a tool off a member for a case of beer at RRE or something of that nature ...

Well if you need the valve spring compressor time now, the parts store is your best bet. Rent and when you turn it back in you get your money back. You just reminded me though, I need to get one! Your pipes are coming along nicely!

You have the motor out, right? If so, you shouldn't have much problem at all finding a valve spring compressor that works. The worst thing about them is the room to use it when the motor is in the truck, there isn't much on the back ones. The one I used has a "round" grip handle on top, and it can be removed to use a wrench on it.

If you can't find something local I could send you one, but for the shipping costs, etc., you should be able to find one that will work.

Yep the motor will be out. Do you have a pic or link to equivalent one by any chance, just so Im sure the style is correct. Something like this?

Also have a short update.

Have been working on the oil drain for the turbo. I want to make something simple and effective with an oring. So I essentially started with a 1.5" piece of solid aluminum.

We have a small lathe at work that hasnt been used in ages. I dusted it off and tried it out, worked some kinks out and got to work. I havnt used a lathe since high school, so it took a bit of familiarizing again.

The reduced area is .850, a touch smaller than the hole from the fuel pump. The large shoulder also shown here will be where a big ol fat o-ring will sit, and it will just seal to the top of the manifold...

Then I got the drill set up

Once it was all finished, it is drilled out to 5/8's ID, and I did a few passes to reduce the top diameter so that it fits on the 1.5" plate a bit better for welding. Made the low shoulder area shiny and that's it. Now I need to dry fit it along with the plate and fitting.

Pretty happy with the drain, was fun to make a custom one-off piece. Ill throw some pics up when it is fitted.
