The 5.4s where offered with 4.10s. The 6.8L where offered 4.30s. Of course the V10 will drink down more gas, it's a bigger engine....
As for should Ford make the Excursion again, I think they should, I'd buy one in a Gasser. Not a really big fan of diesels now that you need DPF fluid n all that nonsense.
5.4-373 410 V10 and diesels-373 410 430
Bigger engines consume more fuel if they do not have adequate air flow the 5.4 in the f150 got better mpg than the 4.6 f150s did. Weight to power and where peak torque is made at and peak power is at also effects gas mileage
I'm not talking about lets say a 460 here but the 6.8 did make a difference compared to the 5.4.
The v10 got better mileage than the 5.4 did cruising towing and unloaded at idle to 2000rpm even at cruising speed the 5.4 sucked down fuel due to the power to weight ratio the 5.4 has a harder time pushing and pulling a superduty or X weight than the v10 the harder an engine has to work the more fuel it will burn just like the 4.6 it worked harder min the f150 than the 5.4. I have a marauder that I swapped a 6.2 l in and it gets better mpgs than the 4.6 did. Bigger enginesmdont always mean worse MPGs silverado 1500s get better MPGs than the f150. The 5.0 pulls 2 points better than Eco turd does!
The 5.4 drinks more gas than the v10 and I will agree about the dpf crap
I would definitely buy one with a 6.2 or 6.8. I am in the market for a big SUV now. Everything out there is so whimpy compared to the Excursion. Even buying an F250 and having it converted is looking good at this point. $30K for a base XL Super Duty then another $41K+ just seems a little crazy. Ford needs to get off its @$$ and build the king of SUVs again!
"you run 37s? That in its self won't help gas mileage"
well of course not But I did not know the conversation was solely about gas mileage. I did for get to mention the 7.3 had 3.73s & the x running 37s is a 4.30 . BUT even If everything were = look at the math I can burn a lot more, cheaper gas at only a 2 to 3 MPG difference tow as much & never spend as much as the 7.3 cost to buy & operate. LOOK I do like diesel I have 5 yes 5 in my diff equipment BUT on the road It's not for me anymore. You used to could **** in a diesel & run it But those days are long gone...
You all can kiss my a$$ about the damn 5.4 being a joke. This is one of the smoothest trucks I've driven now that it's been tuned and maintained properly. I make more fun of it than anyone here but I drive one everyday. I know what it can do and I know how it feels. My truck is a beast and the only reason the 5.4 looks small in it is because of the other motors offered in the line-up. If there was no 5.4 everyone would be talking trash on the 6.8 end of story.

No, the end of the story is that I would rather have the 5.4 than a 350
Well if you think about it's not out of line my MSRP was $51,570 a decade ago.
At today's prices the EX would probably be $75 K - $85 K. Compare to an SD F250 SC and the Cadillac/GM/Chevy in the half-ton category and you are right in the ballpark.
The last 4 "new" cars that we have bought have been same year or one year old model, less than 6,000 miles, sometimes titled, and we have saved between $6,000 - $10,000 over new each time, pay cash. I would probably choke writing a check for $70,000 (as my mom would say) that's more than my first house.
If there were a "market" FORD would produce an EX, they can't make money only producing:
Year Total American sales
1999 18,315
2000 50,786
2001 34,710
2002 29,042
2003 26,259
2004 20,010
2005 16,283
You know, guys. The Excursion is never coming back and there will never be a 1-ton truck-based SUV again. It is simply too small of a market for Ford.
About the only thing that could make any sense might be a 'boutique' manufacturer to buy cab/chassis from Ford and make special-bodied SUVs for a marketplace willing to pay. Think government contracts for forest service, police departments, fire departments, limousine services, etc. where the power of a big diesel could really make a difference. The prices would be very high--I'd guess $100K for a loaded Ex. A smaller specialty manufacturer could perhaps deal with 50 - 500 units / month. There might be some sort of problem(s) with emission or safety certifications using the base vehicle in the paperwork if you produce more than a handful per year.
But...there are in theory >195,000 'used' Excursions out there for rebuilding to our needs. That seems to be where some of the limos are coming from.
If you really want a new one, go to Tims Customs and order one up. You just need a new 2015 SD truck and about $40K to make a new Ex. And...you had better hurry if you want a 'new' Excursion. The SuperDuty will soon be aluminum-bodied and the Tims Customs mod cannot be done using older Excursion steel sheet metal.
I have mine so I can tow a big travel trailer and carry six/seven people in comfort. Most people can do the same for five people with a new SuperDuty pickup. One day, I'm going to have to decide whether it makes sense to keep rebuilding Excursions for our needs.

Reason: Extra comment on aluminum.
I too think about how there are so few Excursions out there for me to grab parts from. My family really loves this truck and it will be a hard day when the decision is made to look for something with which to replace it.

Replace her with what ?? That's the entire problem, NOTHING ELSE CLOSE currently... I hope something shows up soon sos I can afford the 10-15 Y/O ones
A late gen Bronco is the only thing the wife and I can come up with. At least those have a ton of aftermarket support.
Right now the Ex is in a no-mans land as far as economical restoration. Too old for Ford supplied parts (in many cases), and too new for companies like LMC to help out with an entire frame up resto.

Isnt there some guy named Tim doing Fords work for them? Im thinking for about the same price point as well. Plus, with a custom, you can get things you want that Ford may not offer. I wonder what a dually excursion would look like......hmmmmm.

My neighbor is part owner of a ford Lincoln dealership he has an excursion that originally came with the V10 I bought the V10 from him for a hot rod project and he wanted a raptor 6.2 engine swapped in it. Acceleration and power is more than what the factory V10 offered its a pretty cool rig. He drives that sucker every damn day!
He also told me he used to sell a lot of excursions but the biggest complained ford received from consumers was the vehicle is too long for an SUV very little its poor on fuel. Government regulations also might be a problem on this subject as well.
