Having lived through both, I can state without reservation that a long, cold winter is FAR worse than a hot, humid summer.

When it's cold, it's cold all day and all night. Once I became an adult winter was something to get through. If I went out it was to go somewhere, not to do something. And when the sun went down it got even colder!

Here in South Florida no matter how hot and humid it is during the day, once the sun goes down it's usually really comfortable. I can enjoy the outdoors almost every day of the year, though in the hottest months it usually is after dark.

Though I'm a native Floridian, I've lived all over. I agree with you 100%. I would much rather be hot than cold.

I lived through 50 Detroit area winters. And during my engineering career I got to go to northern Canada during the winter. My personal coldest experience was in Timmons, Ontario. Not including wind chill it was -48F one morning.

I've also visited Yellowknife, NWT (5 times!) and Thompson, MB. We saw -20F to -35F almost every morning. But Timmons was still the coldest I've ever experienced. I don't care who you are or how much winter gear you wear, it's STILL UFC*.

*UFC - Unbelievably Freaking Cold!

The coldest that I've experienced in the U.S. is -20F.

I did spend a January in Hamar, Norway. I never saw a temperature, but it certainly never got above freezing. No idea how cold it got.
