Beachbum, I'm sorry to hear your coolant filter has kept you from getting 100k miles out of your truck.
In all seriousness, if you change coolant yearly or every 50k miles, it likely does not master which coolant you use. This includes the green stuff. The green stuff is silicate based. Isn't the green stuff the same as Ford Gold but not as environmentally friendly?
Not sure of the exact answer, but I know from owning my truck since 2003 that green and gold are two different chemisty's and not compatible with our 6.0L motors.
However, one can use Premium Gold coolant in an older 7.3L motor (after flushing all green coolant out as the two types do not play well together).
The Gold coolant has some extra "anti-cavitation" benefits and allows for longer service intervals, however, Ford learned that the 6.0L motor beats the hell out of the coolant and was forced to issue an updated/reduced service interval a few years back.
Flushing one's coolant is necessary, but any solids, sand, particulates, will collect and stay in the "low points" of your system when the motor is off and de-pressurized. However, these "particles" are suspended and move through your cooling system and motor when at operating temps and the system is pressurized... and this is where and why a coolant filter works so well... it's picking up the particles as they are suspended and moving through one's cooling system!!!!
Flushing with distilled water (tap water will have minerals in it that can be found in some filters) is good, but also using a coolant filter is just better, but is not a substitute for changing the coolant on time or ahead of schedule.
If you really want to boost your cooler longevity (oil and EGR). A hand full of peat goes a long way. Easy to get too, Home Depot has 50 pound bags, should be enough "additive" for several sand flushes. Warning, if you perform this mod, you need a custom degas cap that can vent the gases generated by decomposition of the peat.
My EGR cooler is going to last indefinitely. It is a secret method though.
Ford has a line of coolants labeled as "Premium" and still has coolant labeled as "Gold" but there is no longer any such thing as "Premium Gold" unless you run across some that's been on a shelf for a year and a half or longer.
