If you mean you used starting fluid aka ether, do not use it!! If you have a glow plug working it's like a spark plug on all the time, not only the moment when ignition is intended. The ether will fire off soon as it hits, and probably at the wrong time. Russian roulette with an expensive engine.

That said, people do get away with just a whiff and it works. I'd only use it if I had absolutely no other option and had to escape the zombie horde now.

A plug in voltmeter is better. I have the Torque app and I like it, but why dork around with it when you could just sit back and watch the numbers? I watch mine every day as I start to confirm all is normal. And FWIW, sometimes mine will show 10 volts and start just fine.

Well here's my numbers:

When I had the key in the wait to start position the voltage read 11.4....

When I turned the key to start the truck it dropped to 10.1....

These aren't the number I'm looking for.

I have a 1000w block heater, 250 watt oil pan heater, and a 125 watt transmission pan heater.

I keep all three plugged in over night (my electricity is free, thank god). With an ambient temp of approx 20-25 degrees my engine oil temp will be between 102 and 106* and my transmission temp will be around 55-62* when I go to start in the morning.

Sure is nice!

I also have a battery heater on the passenger battery but do not have it plugged in. The three heaters already pull 12.7 amps so I don't want to start flipping breakers or starting fires.

Alright guys.

I tried cycling through the glow plugs three times. Wait to start goes off and I waited 30 seconds. And turned the key off. Did that 3 times. Called Diehardstroker and he said try it again. So the wait to start went off and I tried. Nothing, no start. He said try giving it some gas. So the wait to start goes off I tried it again and it wouldn't fire. One more time, this time I did the same thing as try #5 and as soon as I hit the pedal is fired right up. I let it run for about 10 minutes with no issues, no weird sounds, the valve closed like it was suppose to.

So he recommened glow plugs. So if you guys agree with that I'm planning on getting them next Friday when I get my paycheck.

Id like to add, he has little to no blowby out of the oil fill tube, didnt move the oil cap at all, his injectors sound good no noticeable knock that I could hear last time I rode in it, hes got 10w-30 oil which is thinner than the 15w-40 truck has great power and overall runs real great which leads me to think its the glow plugs. Just thought id give a reason for my diagnosis

Just don't get Autolites. You might consider 5-40 as winter oil as well.

What exactly are autolites?

Thanks Tugly. I just changed my oil about 3K miles ago so with all this stuff going on with the truck at the moment id like to skip a $100 oil change. You know what I mean?

Autolites are a brand of glow plug. As far as I know, most non-Motorcraft glow plugs will not last in this application.

Well I was hopin to push this 10w-30 through the winter... It'll probably be closer to 6K on this oil then it'll be spring and I'll put 15w-40 in her.

Oh yea, I planned on MotorCraft anyway. With stuff that you want to spend more money, the more money spent usually the better quality.

So DHamSTER is coming down Nov. 16th to take care of some exhaust work and were gonna do glow plugs, i suggested a few things since we will have the valve covers off, like the new UVCH harness with the better tabs, is the only place to get those through International? I also mentioned re-torqueing the injector hold down bolts, 120-130 INCH LBS right? and also is there a certain torque spec the valve cover bolts should have or are those just "snug em up"?
