I jumped here late , but want to say one thing . I made a high pressure oil tester . A few fittings and a high pressure gauge on a length on hydrolic hose . I work on a lot of Cat and IH powerd trucks . It comes in handy for testing for all sorts of pressure issues in these systems . Helps me often .
We took out the fuel filter Sunday and tried starting it without it just to eliminate a clogged filter as a variable. Then when we tried to open the bowl, it was pressurized to the point that it was somewhat difficult to get it back open. As we loosened it, fuel sprayed out of the threads all over the place so I think we have enough fuel pressure that it shouldn't be a hinderence to at least turning over. .
If I remember correctly, I believe there is a valve in the fuel bowl that prevents you from not installing a fuel filter. If you don't install a filter it won't let fuel leave the bowl to go to the motor. Also do not remove the filter cap with it pressurized. Its kinda unsafe. That's what the fuel bowl drain is for. You can leave the filter in and open the drain, with a hose from the drain to a container and have someone turn the key. Fuel should flow steady. That's the safer way to check for fuel flow. Good luck.
I've been following this thread hoping for a quick and positive outcome.
When I finished changing injector o-rings the beast took several long cranks to fire and in-between cranks I checked HPOP level and had oil spill out of the hole so I wouldn't be too concerned about that.
I thought at first the o-rings cured my HARD starts but after the truck sat for three days in single digit lows the beast was very unhappy and took several long cranks before finally starting. Oh and the starting system should be tip top seeing how its almost all brand new. I'm pretty sure I have at least one failing injector and I would imagine that if someone had a few bad injectors that would cause a no-start situation, but I'm just a green horn when it comes to these trucks.
When you cycle the glow plugs, what does the battery voltage drop down to? What is the battery voltage when the glow plugs are off? I can shoot up your way next week if you need it...
When cycling the glow plugs it drops down to 11.8-11.9. When off it is 12.8. When cranking with glow plugs energized it is 10.8 or so. A bit above the 10.5 minimum I have seen talked so frequently.
As far as how old is the oil, I am not certain, I did not do my last oil change myself and I don't think I recorded the mileage. I will have to call my mechanic tomorrow and see what he has in his computer for mileage. I know it is probably way overdue for the normal 5,000 mile interval change, but then again, I always go longer than that. When I was doing used oil analysis, I was getting really good results going to 9,000 miles. But I may even be a bit over that, I am not sure.
OIL LEVEL
Low or dirty oil can cause intermittent low power, miss, rough run, no start etc. Make sure the oil level is correct and the oil is in good condition (less than 3000 miles before trying to cure any other drivability or starting issues.
You mean that one?
I am on it...before anything else gets done...fresh oil and filter, pronto.
Rich, I swear, I used to take waaaay better care of my baby than what I am showing in this thread. Life has gotten in the way.
I hear yuh. I used to be rabid about my sail boat... until Stinky "muscled" in. Wild Blue Juander and Doc are ready to shove a boom between Stinky's headlights.
- yours sounded (in the video) just like my F-250 did last year. Would take at least 15 seconds to start and when she did she would smoke for a bit. I replaced the GPR, glow plugs & UVC harnesses - didn't fix the problem. Mine turned out to be the starter.
I know you replaced it recently - but with what brand? Autozone? O'Rielly maybe?
edit: the link to my troubleshooting thread ....................
Hey Rich, good to see you too man. I did unplug the ICP and it is a new starter and the RPM's it's getting are way above 100. Rich(Tugly) has the data I think it's bouncing between 180 and 300 or so. I believe it is an Advance Auto. Their top of the line lifetime warranty one.
So when are you going to change the oil? The suspense is killing me..lol..My Dad had that problem with his truck and had to explain to him about the hpop system. He changed the oil and all was good.
