When cycling the glow plugs it drops down to 11.8-11.9. When off it is 12.8. When cranking with glow plugs energized it is 10.8 or so. A bit above the 10.5 minimum I have seen talked so frequently.
As far as how old is the oil, I am not certain, I did not do my last oil change myself and I don't think I recorded the mileage. I will have to call my mechanic tomorrow and see what he has in his computer for mileage. I know it is probably way overdue for the normal 5,000 mile interval change, but then again, I always go longer than that. When I was doing used oil analysis, I was getting really good results going to 9,000 miles. But I may even be a bit over that, I am not sure.
I will check tomorrow.
That voltage seems high to me with the glow plugs energized. Do the gp,s go through a fusible link as well?
New starter
New batteries
new GPR
glow plugs ohm out good
the only current code (after clearing) is P0607 KAM which is normal for any chipped truck
is the tach moving while starting?
I think I read a page back about Rich suggesting your remove the chip (DP Tuner). Just to rule it out and put it back to stock.
Tach is not moving while cranking, truck is 2003 and I thought that that may be different for '02 and '03 trucks. I havent pulled the chip yet. I will on next go 'round.
Here is a video of me cranking it over after an oil change with Rotella T 15 w 40 and having cycled the glow plugs at least 3 times and cranked over 5 or 6 a couple of minutes prior. Notice no movement in the Tach and this is the most smoke it had made in a while. I actually wanted to video it because it was not making much smoke at all but on that attempt it made a pretty good amount. My question is this, how long do you think it will take for the new oil to make it into the HPOP and cycle enough of the old oil out so that its new oil attempting to fire the injectors?
NOW your injectors are firing for real... it almost took off there for a sec. Oil moves slow through the filter, HPOP, lines, and chambers until she's running... plus you're likely dealing with a lot of air on top of the tired oil. I say plug it in for about 3 hours before your next attempt... you are sooo close.
Oh man Jason, it's right there. You've got fuel now going into the cylinders obviously. Just a matter of cranking all the air out of the HPOP lines, at least enough to get it to go. It took a good 20 miles of driving after doing the HP oil crossover for me to get all the air out if that gives you an idea (just an encouragement to be patient I guess), and you've been into the reservoir a couple of times so it seems like that's going to take some more cranking. Almost there, though.
Sorry to be negative, but even after replacing injector cups it didn't take as long as that to kick over. I'de be temped to pop off the drivers side valve cover if plugging it in doesn't work. Damn you were close there though. I hope it's the oil but I know your UOA reports from the past and your viscosity was alway good at 7-9,000 miles. Your oil pressure popped to center of mass within 2 seconds of cranking.
Finally!!! I couldn't wait. Air temp was mid 40's today and I had left the charger on for 3 hours and they were all charged up. So when I got home I cranked her over a few times and she starting smoking again. Next time she sputtered and ran a little then died. Then I cranked her over again and what seemed about 2 cylinders caught and she stayed lit. I got the iPad really quick and took a terrible video, I am sorry to say , but I am going to post it anyway so you can hear how bad she was running.
So then I let her run in stock tune for a few minutes to get heat into her. I had the doors open and they were shaking, the exhaust tip was rattling around, it looked bad but at least she was running. So I backed her into the street and switched to the 80E tune which I drive in 95% of the time anyway. I gave her a quick quarter throttle stab and she smoothed out. I drove around the neighborhood for a minute then decided to go on a little country road ride listening to her purr. I didn't even put the radio on. Just listened to the engine and puffed a little smoke when to opportunity presented itself. Man it was nice to be back in my diesel. Don't get me wrong, I am happy we kept the Expy around and she has been a big help, but nothing feels as good as my Superduty.
I have to run some errands but I will be back on a little later. Couldn't wait to let everyone know what was going on. I am cautiously optimistic that we got her figured out. We should have a definitive answer tomorrow am. Thanks to everyone who has participated in this thread. You all have no idea how your concerns and input has helped inspire me to figure this puppy out. Thank you all so much.
Short moral of the story, I think, is keep good oil in the truck. Longer one to follow.
