Drop the pan change the filter top off and drive if it's better do the fluid transfer from the link that Mark posted . at the very least you're not out of cash for 3 cases of ATF if the tranny still doesn't shift right .
The tranny pan bolts are 10mm , it's an easy job . We can walk you through it if you're interested . And the filter should be changed reguardless

How do I drain the fluid, as mine doesn't have a drain plug. That's why I was gonna flush it. I guess I could run my floor jack under it,to support it while I unbolt it. To keep from taking a fluid bath. On another note, is there any way to adjust the kick down shifting or the idle speed

Both the kickdown and the idle speed are adjusted by aftermarket tuners or chips. Neither has a mechanical adjustment.

Working from the far side of the tranny remove the pan bolts , that way when the fluid starts to drain you aren't getting a bath . Let the pan dip down and the fluid drain out . Then remove the rest of the bolts . Some trannys will have a reusable pan gasket , some don't .
I can't remember if there is a bolt holding the filter in or if it's just pressed into the pump .

About the rebuild

If it comes down to rebuilding a tranny, if you have a friend that is kind of a mechanic you might try ATC Pro King/Automatic Transmission Rebuild Kit (KS-65) | 1989 Ford F250 3/4 ton P/U 2WD 8 Cylinders H 5.8L FI | AutoZone.com
It's a hell of a lot cheaper than having a shop do it. I've rebuilt about 6 different transmissions and it's not as hard as it's made out to be.

No I found an easier solution. Replaced the truck with a 2013. Problem solved
