I have a 1997 F-250, with a 7.3 Powerstroke and an E40D transmission. The truck is difficult to get into reverse after it warms up. And it seems to downshift out of drive often without justification.I have only had the truck a short while, and do not know its history. It has 213,000 miles on it. Any insight, would be appreciated.
The column linkage is a little misaligned. When the truck warms up, sometimes it wont go.into reverse. I have to Rev up the truck, then it engages rather hard. The downshift seems to occur at 30 - 40 MPH. It upshifts well, although seems to never get below 1500 rpm at 35 mph...Then seems to slip out of drive e into a lower gear. Its like 20 degree in Dallas right now. I have had several other diesel trucks, but never a 7.3 that is this old. So I really don't know what to expect. And if I need to replace the transmission, I will just dump the truck at auction As a 1997, doesn't warranty a $2000 transmission overhaul.
Having to rev it up to get it into reverse sounds like its low on fluid. In your opening statement you said that it downshifts out of drive. What do you mean?
Look at the m.l.p. sensor. That is the sensor where the shifter attaches to the trans. IF it is very old I would get one. They used to be a frequent issue . I even replaced mine this last week.
I am not sure that all your issues will be fixed but if it were mine that is what I would do.
also realign the shifter with the indicator.adj with the trans and shifter in neutral.
What is the lip sensor you are speaking of? And how do re align the shifter? I checked the fluid yesterday, and it appears to be allright. Although it is kind of hard to see the fluid. I wonder how much an overhaul on an E40 D would cost? I guess I should just go ahead and sell it. I really had reservations on a truck this old, with 213,000 miles on it. Thanks for the help.
The sensor is only a "range detecting" devise .
In other words it lets the computer know what gear the transmission is in and how the computer should control it ; reverse is just like reverse in a C6 tranny , tranny has had it .
Yeah its not worth that. If it was a 2007, rather than a 1997 I might justify it. Would be crazy putting $2500 into a $3000 truck. Off to the wrecking yard it goes...
Dallas, Texas. The shifter linkage is very loose, and problematic to get into the proper gear. I wonder if that could be causing the issues. I thought these trucks were decent, but after my second bad one ( 2005) I won't buy another one.
