Mini Update:

Got the pump timed and locked in place. I put the engine at TDC when I put the head on some 3 years ago, and it was still there haha. Once the pump was timed I was able to adjust the valves (need to turn the engine to adjust all the valves).

Now I just need to add some oil and turn it over to see if I get oil pressure. This thing is sooooo freaking close to being able to fire up. I'm working on getting my fuel manifold finished up (that might hold me up now). I'm going to stop by the local maker space tonight. They have a couple bridgports, CNC mills, and a lathe. Not a bad setup, I really miss having access to a machine shop!

I'm shooting for first fire by the end of May.

Well I got the engine timed and the valve adjusted. Turned it over to check for oil pressure and got nothing! Cranked it 3 times at 10-15 seconds each. Then cranked it for about 20 seconds, then gave up. The oil pump is not pumping oil.

Here's my thoughts: I did not put Vaseline on the pump gear when i installed it, I could try taking the pump apart and packing it with Vaseline to help it pull suction. The second thought is there is an air leak in the pickup tube. This could be caused by a crack in the tube or the pickup tube not seating correctly on the flange. I think this is less likely, but still possible.

Anyone have any suggestions? Pulling the pump is a small job compared to pulling the oil pan to get to the suction tube. I'm kinda frustrated and needed to walk away from this and have some time to think about it.

I agree with putting some heavy lube in the oil pump. I used Lucas engine break-in lubricant when I assembled my engine. Very thick stuff. Oil pump got a liberal dose of it, Picked oil up quick when I was spinning it over before first start. Hope this fixes your problem.

Primer Shaft

Not that it may matter now, but you can spin that oil pump shaft with a drill using an hold Dizzy shaft or a ARP/Melling primer shaft and you will know right away if the pump is moving oil, and you can burn up a drill right quick if you keep at it ............ and it will register on the pressure gauge.... You may also not have the pump to dizzy shaft seated ? or the shaft fell out into the pan ? Which would really suck.....

Check all the easy crap before pulling that pan, I had to pull mine after I had it all sealed up

Im not a mechanic by any stretch, but did you prime the pump with some oil in it and turn the shaft prior to install ? This results in an inevitable mess, but did show it was working for me on both of the pumps I put in...Cuz I like to do things twice

The pump is gear driven on the front of the engine, no way to manually spin it without cranking the engine.

I'll try lubing up the pump with vasoline or break in lube. Try the easy stuff first!

Yeah the cummins is quite different from the standard american V8 design. I think it's a well designed piece of machinery, but a big learning curve for me!

Your pump is working. It has to its gear driven. You need to pressure prime the engine. I use a 1 gallon garden sprayer with the sprayer removed, and an 1/8" npt nipple. Disconnect the vacuum pump oil line and plumb in there. I pumped about a gallon into mine. Then filled the engine to capacity. Those oil galleys are a long way from the oil pickup in the pan. Doing it this way pumps oil back to the pump and down into the pickup.

Don't see why this wouldn't work. Similar to filling the pump cavity with Vaseline, just need to prime the pump. I may give this a shot, thanks for the suggestion!

We've got oil pressure! Packed the pump with Vaseline and within 10 seconds of cranking I had pressure. Thanks all for the help!

I'm going to try to get the fuel manifold finished up this week, thats the last big thing holding me up from starting. I should have this thing running by the end of the month.

Started on the fuel manifold last night. Got all the milling done, just have to bore and tap holes. Great to be back playing on the mill!
