Turn out, while trying to hunt down an affordable code reader for my buddy Arnold, the SES came on for Old Green.
At first, it didn't make a difference. Everything still functioned perfectly normal. As of yesterday, though, it is starting to show symptoms:
While crusing at ~50, it will begin to feel like it wants to take off. Kind of accelerating on its own, but in bursts- then the SES light comes on.
Some days, the light never comes on and everything is perfectly normal. Any ideas what could be causing this? Really need to get codes read to have an idea of where the hell to start. Don't think I want to keep driving her under these conditions.
When it is acting up can if you use cruise control, does it go away?
Tough without codes, but it could be a TPS issue.
I know you know the codes would help pinpoint the issue.
Still have not been able to get the codes read. Messed with it the other day, and when it starts to act up, cruise control will engage and function normally, but the SES light stays on.
Hopefully we will be able to get the codes read soon and get it taken care of. For now, the little leak the water pump had turned into a massive leak so that is the priority this week.
Are you saying with cruise activated the issue goes away, aside from the SES light? If so, that is even more likely to be TPS related.
Alan, the thing is, it runs fine most of the time when the SES light is on. But, when the light is on, every now and then the engine will rev up on its own. It does this in short bursts- like stomping the pedal 2 or 3 times real quick. Did it with the cruise control on. Was surprised it didn't disengage.
Freaked out the other day, because I was at a light behind a cop and it did this. Was worried the cop thought I wanted to ram his car, lol.
Are there any quick tests that can be done to check the TPS?
You could try measuring resistance as it would work just like a "dimmer" switch. Varying the resistance, you want a smooth steady sweep, no spikes while moving it.
Other than that, you can view that on good diagnostic scanners.
Spoke to Stewart and he is going to send me his scanner to see if it will read the codes. We are also going to get one of those BT readers, so hopefully, we will know more soon.
Think we found what is causing the intermittent SES light and strange behavior on old green:
The alternator toasted itself. You can see some of the coil pieces on the radiator hose. NEVER seen this before! It, and the water pump, are being replaced this week. Hopefully that is all there is to it.
Alternator and water pump have been replaced. The alternator bearing went out and took out the serpentine belt. Idler pulley had also developed some play. After taking care of all this, the truck is running tip top again and the SES light if off.
figured these things needed to be addressed before continuing to track the cause of the SES and funky issue. Guess the malfunctioning alternator was the cause.
