There are a hundred different reasons and you'll spend thousands and thousands of dollars and countless hours replacing all the parts that might trip the light. Much easier to pull the codes. The computer will tell you what the codes are.
The easiest thing to do is spend about $30 on a code reader from an auto parts store or online. You want the equus innova 3145. You can read the codes by hand with a paperclip but it's very error prone and frustrating.
You can also get the codes read for free at an auto parts store if you're lucky. A lot of them seem to have problems getting codes from OBD-I vehicles like yours.
