I already caught that bug on the Kerosene dead-flame lamps...got a bunch of those; Dietz, Monarch, etc...and though they work great and are very simple the light is pretty poor.
Been using the screw-on propane canisters for a long time on both the stove and the lantern, I think it's time to get back to basics.
Happy Sunday everyone!...even if I have to fly again headed your way!!!...
But the good news...I get home on Thursday and we leave on Friday for our near 3 week RV trip through some more of our beautiful country...after this trip our 13 and 15 yr old girls will have been in 40 states!!!
Hope everyone has a wonderful day and a great week ahead...
Oh yeah...the triple digits have FINALLY broken in Indiana...we'll "only" be in the upper 80's today!
I'm not sure what model lanterns I have...I've got 2 that are filled with liquid "white" gas...one of them is a "dual fuel" version that can use unleaded gasoline too...then I've got the screw in propane cylinder version one too...I've used these lanterns for night time crappie fishing hanging them on hangers over the side of the boat...nice way to night fish!
Not really. A biggish set of slip joint pliers and a strap wrench. I'm pulling my fuel tank Sat and was hoping they had something big enough for the bung nut. Sadly I don't expect either one to help much, but at least I'll have them.
If you haven't got it done already, I used a big ol clamp as a wrench for the giant lockring on my tank.Worked excellent.

Got 'er done yesterday morning. I just used a piece of flat steel and a hammer to drive on the lugs to snug it down. Last time I had it out for the harpoon, I had a leak and had to lift the bed again to tighten it up more. When I took it out this time I discovered that I didn't have the seal seated properly in the groove. I don't know how it didn't leak for the last 3 years. In fact it probably did a little bit. This time I had a new softer seal and I didn't have to tighten it nearly so much.
This time I think your clamp idea would have worked good.
Here is a pic of how that seal was sitting. Obviously kinked, and no way was it going to sit down in that groove. Maybe the lesson learned is, have a new seal on hand any time you pull the sender.

When I had mine out last summer, I found the same thing when I went to re-install it.
I merely stretched the ring a bit, and quickly put the sender lid back on. I could feel it was OK, so I added the ring while holding down on the lid. Fortunately, I had a few savvy FTE'rs watching, and they lent assistance.
Nick (weekendwarriorfsw32) wisely suggested after I had the ring back to its original place to "Snug it down just a bit more", and it never leaked.
I forced the ring around with a block of wood and a hammer to get it both loose and re-tightened. Worked well.
Pop, the old seal was so hard that I would be afraid of it breaking if I had tried stretching it. But that's only a guess. Laying it the sun would probably help.
The other thing I did different this time is slobbering vaseline on the top of the sender plate, and the threads on the nut. The nut felt a lot better with that lubrication. For good measure I slobbered up the seal too.
Give Marty a call at Southern California Truck Wrecking, 8229 S. Alameda St. in LA (323-587-3144). Located 2 blocks north of the old Firestone Tire plant at Alameda & Firestone.
Tell him "Packard Bill" gave you the info.
I talked with Marty on Friday (fine sense of humor that guy). Of course he knew Packard Bill, had lots of colorful commentary (maybe save that for later...). He's open to the idea, though he wanted me or someone to case the joint to see if it met our G2G needs.
I was figuring on a coffee/donut stop before the visit, then hit Marty's yard. I'm open every weekend in August - 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th.
I'll set 'er up, we just need to agree on the weekend that works for most.
Quiet around here tonight, we're dangerously close to NO POSTS on the All topic for 24hrs - ladies and gents, we have rules, and that's one we just won't break...
