I stayed at the Sheraton in downtown Anchorage a few years back (the U shaped parking lot looks familiar). I was there working the Coast Guard booth at the great alaska sportsman show, at night we'd head down to the "Polar Bar". Nice little dive bar, I met an Inuit gentleman who was walking around with a whale bone snow mask. I love that city, but I left my heart in Kodiak

i love anchorage
so yesterday i went out to wasilla and big lake. picked up some explorer parts then went out on the ice road of big lake, alaska. its getting pretty warm...40s during the day so i was not sure how long the ice would be safe. there was alot of standing water and very slushy so i was careful.
headed out of town she rolled 115,555 haha
this was somewhere in downtown wasilla wish it would have zoomed better but oh well. i love reflections
the explorer crap i bought.
wheres the dumpster?
careful! its a no wake zone! haha
some of the standing water

i'm so used to the ice roads it doesn't scare me much. the standing water this late in the season does make me a little worried haha but i saw alot of other people out there and some large trucks so i felt it was safe.
this was a few years ago with my old 2004 excursion. the girl freaking out was from Chicago and it was her first time ever on a ice road. also said to be her last haha

i have 55w 8000K HIDs, they have a blue tint but not overly so in my opinion.

I think I could handle the ice road, in a rental! The slush part would make me a uneasy though. I take an ATV on the frozen lake down here, I actually rode it all the way around the lake once, following the tracks of all the snowmobiles. One time I broke through right in front of the house though, and that was not fun. There was thick ice underneath, but slush and a thinner layer of ice on top. Broke through the top without knowing of the second layer. No brown stains, but it was close!

i know that made no sense!
yes this time of year with it being above freezing in the day you find overflows much more. i normally dont like to go out there this late in the season for that reason. we did have a cold and very deep snowy winter which really helped produce a very thick ice layer. i checked with some locals before getting out to the lake and when i was there i saw some bob cats, dump trucks, a grader and plenty of SUVs and pickups so i felt very safe with it.
the larger standing water on the lesser driven plowed roads i would not cross, i backed up a long ways when i found one spot i did not like. i dont have full coverage at the moment so i cant loose my baby!
