To me, I thought it was a probe for maybe a oil temp gauge or maybe oil pressure gauge. There used to be a probe like object sticking out of the middle of it that broke fairly easy, it was almost like a plastic material.
Hey guys, sorry it has been a while since I have posted....I have been running into small problems left and right, but I am seeing progress, slowly but surely

The location tells me its either an oil temp sender, or possibly a low oil level warning sender. if you knew where the 302 came from it would help determine what it was for
I go with the temp sender theory.... unless there is some sort of mechanism like a toilet tank float ball on the other side, there is no way a sensor in that location can be useful to determine the level of oil in the container.
I know the motor came out of a 1985 car, which one I'm not sure. The kid thought it was from a Thunderbird but was not 100%. Also the oil pan is not a stock pan, it is a dual sump oil pan because the kid was going to swap this into a Ranger.
Slowly but surely she is coming together....I had to swap out timing covers because the one on the 302 did not have a hole for a fuel pump! Luckily the 351 cover did and fit perfectly. I'm also having trouble installing the harmonic balancer....it is too deep for me installer kit, so I'm on the prowl for a small piece of pipe to hopefully drive that son of a B on there. After that its just a matter of installing the accessories and fire her up!

You should be able to use the bolt for the balancer to pull it on. I wouldn't drive it on as that can cause the outside ring to come forward.

Not a level sensor, but a low level sensor. I dont know about fords, but i do know chevy cars used them. the sensor would screw into the side of the oil pan, and having oil at that level would close the sensor, and allow the car to start. If you didnt have enough oil to cover the sensor, it would open, and the car would not start or run
I guess "drive it on" was the phrase I should have used.......it will pull it on, we tried using the bolt but the motor kept on turning over. Like I said though I own a Harmonic Balancer Installer Kit, the balancer itself is just a little too deep so I cannot get a wrench on it. I'm hoping a small steel nipple or a 3/4" drive socket to put between the Nut and Drive Bearing will help pull it in.
To stop the crank from spinning I use a flat pry bar on the back of the motor to wedge on the flywheel starter ring and bell housing alignment stud. you could also try an impact on the bolt.
Early model fox body Mustangs had that low oil sensor wired to a idiot light.
