So let it run at 2500-3000 rpms until it warms up? It is about 40 degrees out

I wouldn't. That's spinning too fast. I would check to see if the fast idle cam, or anything else for that matter, is holding the throttle off the idle stop. I doubt the problem is a mixture problem as that would only increase the speed slightly. In fact, ignition timing shouldn't do that either. So, something must be holding the throttle open.

Hmmmm it's the same carb that was on the 351 and it maybe had 25 miles on it and I didn't adjust it at all, maybe the pedal? Its a lokar custom set up, I'll check that.

Checked the linkage and its fine, checked all vaccuum lines and they're good, checked to see if maybe a ground or something was loose and all is well. And i just went to fire it up and it would act like it wanted to start but then die off and it sounded like the timing was off? Idk what is going on anymore hahaha

If the timing is way fast it'll be both hard to start and run fast. But, I wouldn't have thought it would run THAT fast, not w/o the throttle being open a ways.

If the timing is slow it can be hard to start but it won't run fast. In fact, it'll take more throttle than normal to run.

Let me go back for a second. When you posted #71 did it start right up but ran high idle?

Then after you checked some things you tried to start the truck again but doesn't start right away. You then disconnected the electric choke (which doesn't matter for starting). If it has an electric choke did you happen to leave the key on when you were fiddling with other things? This could cause the choke to open all the way without the engine running depending on how it's wired.

So, when you checked your linkage, when the pedal is at rest the throttle on the carb is all the way forward (no play)? What is your timing set at? I have mine at 6BTDC which from what I've read on these forums is pretty standard.

Remember when you check your timing to disconnect any vacuum advance. In fact, you can go ahead and leave it disconnected until you're ready to take it down the road.

Does the truck try to start at all (not crank but try to start but fails)?

It started right up and ran high.

I disconnected the electric choke and looked around and found nothing, tried to start and it would cough and try to but would not run, sounded like it had a miss.

I then reconnected the choke and still the same, would try to start, would cough, but would not run.

It sounds like mine did when I didn't have my timing correct. Have you had a timing light on it?

so I found a burnt up wire going from the MSD box to the Solenoid on the fenderwell, the choke tied into that, im thinking the choke wire touched something metal and grounded out, conflabbit :/
