Mine is definitely due, and since it's a two man operation that sounds like a great idea. We can do yours first
Can't swing it today. How about tomorrow if the weather holds?
Not today. I'm going to have to shop for the fluid, and I will pick up some tubing from work next week. I was thinking of Friday.
I would still like to suck as much old oil out of the res as possible instead of running it all through the pump. Do you have one of those sucker pumps?
I don't know. I'd always figured to use Mobil 1...had no idea it's no longer available until today when I read it here.
There's always the Motorcraft stuff...might get a decent price @ Sunrise/w the SoCaps discount. Synthetic would be nice, like you said...maybe Royal Purple?
Sometime this afternoon I will browse Pep Boys and then Walmart if necessary. RP would be good if they have it, and I think the Boys do carry it. I don't think it would be worth driving to Fontana for any discount. I heard they pulled Valvoline synthetic too, which is another I would have used.
If you consider how often you will likely change it, synthetic might just be over-kill (though I've NEVER heard of that being a bad thing!).
I changed mine with Mobil 1, but that was before the ban. I also have a spin-on filter on this system, http://springerpop.net/F350/hydraulic_filter.html
so it's conceivable that mine will go for a hundred thousand or so before the next addressing. I know this might be pushing even synthetic, but forgetting about these things is the reason I have all those filters.
Any specific reason for going syn? Consider adding a Magnefine?

Just hoping it will last longer, I guess. Mine looks pretty dark. If the dealer did what they said they did, which is a big IF, there is only 45k on this fluid. I think it looks worse than it should for so few miles. Maybe the extra heat stabilization would be worth the money for synthetic.
I'm not all that hot on a filter. I know many here love the idea. Eh, not a big deal to me. Certainly cheap enough.

Yes, and I can guess that the system gets pretty hot when off-roading, backing trailers, etc. Lots of heat, little air flow. I believe the fluids lose their anti-foaming additives primarily due to heat over time. When it starts foaming, you gots problems.
Most of the heat in the entire system is generated by the nature of the pumping system. Positive displacement pump, and anything not used is "bypassed", so there is energy being pumped into the oil even if there is no usage.
The heat buildup is more related to engine RPM than anything else.
And yes, air flow over the cooler is the most important part of cooling.
I just did a search of the Mobil website for "Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF California"
Got four hits, but none had anything that resembled:
"Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF has not been recalled. It is, however, temporarily
unavailable for sale in the state of California. We can assure you that
there are no performance or safety concerns with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.
ExxonMobil stands behind this product. Thank you for your interest and
loyalty."
My Mightyvac kit came with a few different bottle caps and adapters designed to auto-fill a reservoir for jobs like this. (Already have the Motorcraft ATF sitting in the garage to do this job - it's part of what i've been putting off.) Wondering if using the Mighty bottle caps will make the job manageable for one person to do.
If it works out - you guys are welcome to borrow it. (Has all the adapters to connect the clear line too, even if it's not exactly the right size....)
