My wife and I were checking out some property yesterday. We moved down the frontage at idle, and as we passed the entrance saw a small deer standing about 70' behind the gate. So I backed up so that we had a good view and sat there for some time exchanging stares with the deer.
After a long stare-down we pulled into the drive, stopping at the chain that was across the gate. The deer still hasn't flinched. The path ahead of us had an overgrown canopy so a photo from the cell phone wouldn't have come out well.
We finally got out of our vehicle and walked up to the chain. The deer was still there. We stepped over the chain and started a slow walk up the path. We got about 30' from the deer before she finally moved. She took a few steps to get off the path. Her movement showed that she still had some of a fawn's coloring.
It was clear that she had never seen people before and didn't know what to make of us. I don't know where momma was, but I suspect that she wound up in the back of a hunter's pickup truck.
It was quite a site being able to walk up to that 6-7 month old deer without spooking her! Wish I'd have had my "real" camera with me, too!
Three weeks ago I was on an off track back road. There was a very young fawn in the middle of the paved road. I could tell it was lost just by looking at it. I got out of the truck and walked rite up to it, and guided it off the road to the woods.
it started to follow me as i went back to the truck, than turned around and went back into the woods.
