ok i checked all my wiring harness and fixed the burnt ones replaced all glow plugs got new injectors and it still smokes on start up and the glow plug relay is good anything else that can cause white smoke?
tho no pro I'd say white smoke is unburnt fuel...I have the same prob...injectors in my trucks future...like next spring...plug it in and it will start faster and warm up quicker...just my .02
OK, question. Been having some rough issues getting my truck to start when it's cold out (50f or below). When it finally starts, there's one heck of a cloud of white smoke. So, I started with the easiest and quickest part swap, the GPR. No change whatsoever. I also have purchased new glow plugs, just haven't had the time to install. When the truck is cold, it can take anywhere from 10-20 minutes to start. I turn the key on, wait till the WTS light goes off, and then wait a few more seconds before cranking. Still takes a long time. Am I on the wrong path in changing the glow plugs? This truck has 250K+ on it, and don't know the previous maintenance or replacement of parts. Ideas?
Oh, and thanks to all who have contributed to this post, this is probably the most important post on the site, especially considering the time of year and weather.

AND, if I plug the truck in over night, it fires right up. At what temp should you have to plug your truck in in order for it to start? 50f seems a little warm to have to plug it in, but I'm still new at the diesel game.
thats baby smoke coon. You cant see any thing when i start up. Looks like i have a smoke machine for about thte first 60 seconds. I'll try and take video of it some time when ever my camera gets back it broke
It was always smokey but with the stage 2s it really smokes you out and has a cammed sound to it like drag cars. Sounds just liek a semi idling after a cold start

x2. If my good camera had any battery left I'd shoot a vid of mine starting at 10 degrees out. Sounds like a she's got a huge cam. I have bigger nozzles plus the 10K that pushes a lot of fuel that the computer doesn't know about.
WMiller if you don't get a vid I'll get some battery's tonight and take a vid.
Im actually took the 18k out didnt think there was much need with bigger sticks and am running with out the chip (tony is reburning it) It should be back tomorrow cant wait.
I wont have my camera for prob 2-3 weeks. Im hoping i can get it back my christmas but we'll see
I agree with the cammed sound. It sounds BA. Anyone think you could make tune that didit all the time?
Ok guys I am sorry if I missed it but I read threw it and I can't find a link for where to get the stancore Upgraded Relay and will this Bigger Relay bolt right up to where the other one is.
Thanks
Nick
wes, i do beleive tony has a "lope" tune. i thik he renamed them a while back it used to be called "smoke" or "aggressive" something along those lines...... basicly he commands lots of fuel right off idle just to load up and smoke. it should have a good lope to it
Great thread. My '96 7.3 was getting pretty cranky about starting in -40 weather. Had it plugged in and all that. Finally changed to Petro Canada's Duron 5-40 synthetic oil and an oilpan heater. I always wait for the GP's to cycle full time before cranking, and it starts right off every time. Smoke? Oh yeah, she smokes, but once warmed up it goes away. Great for keeping the mosquitoes away in the summer .
ok folks I know this is an old thread but figured id give it a try before starting a new one. Heres the history I have a 97 F250 7.3 Turbo Diesel. Cold mornings sucked for me to crank a cpl days ago after a hard start I was ready to park the truck. Before I did it started to run very rough and had low rpms. I shut it down and went to work and tried later that day to start it, NO LUCK NO WAY. I had thought for some time that it was a glow plug issue and I also noticed the starter had some drag to it. I changed the starter and that cured the drag. After reading some on this forum and one from another for 7.3 diesels I tried to replace the Glow Plug Relay. I used the NAPA GPR-109 Part though it was a little different than mine it worked. The old girl tried to crank at this point but still nada. Sooo With the help of a little starter ether I did achieve a start up. However it ran very rough and with it floored i could just get a little over 2000rpm's I also found a fuel leak from maybe two locations. Now understand I am far from being a mechanic and Im not sure of the proper names for the parts but i can describe the areas and some of you guys in the know may be able to help me. Looking at the fuel filter on top of the engine to the right there is a protrusion coming straight out from the side of the engine that would be on the driver side. There is a wire connected to it, is this some sort of sensor? Also to the rear of the fuel filter under the turbo lines there appears to be some sort of device that I suspect may be a fuel pump? maybe lol. there is a huge puddle of fuel gathered under that area. Now I also am curious as to the injector pump Is that the rectangular aluminum looking box that sits in front of the Fuel Filter area. And i really dont have a clue as to where the injectors are im guessing close to the cylinder heads. It has become a matter of pride now that i fix the old girl myself. Im not stupid lol though I am ignorant in this area. any help would be so greatly appreciated thanks in advance folks.

how does the relay flow more current? its a direct link to the battery. it will flow whatever the battery can produce. changing the relay should have no change in current flow to the motor. all it does is withstand the current better then a stock relay.
I just traded my 93 460 F250 for a 97 7.3 PSD F250...
Problems... It has a CEL, wont start unless plugged in/over 50 degrees, and has white smoke until about 5 minutes of warm up.
Here is my diagnoisis... The CEL was on with a code that said the Glow Plugs had low voltage, according to the guy i traded with. He had replaced the GPR, so next on the list is glow plugs.
To do the glow plugs, it just requires taking the valve covers off and taking the wiring off, unscrewing the glow plugs, putting new plugs in place, and plugging them back in?
To take off the valve covers what else needs to be taken off?
I will try and get the code read tommorow after school to see if I can get a read code to maybe pin point it better.
