1/4 or 3/8 rachet with a 2in or 3in extention, and a 10mm socket, to use, to remove the cps sensor. Found it easier to use this, then the 10mm wrench. Not sure if there was a pic of its location, but look on passenger side, in fornt of motor, mid way down, then once located it, better/easier to access it, from under the truck.....my .02 pennies. good luck, hope all turns out well.
The mechanic told me there is a "core charge" on the injector of $180 or something like that. Is that true??
Probably. See if they'll give you that credit later - after analysis?? Maybe someone has a junk injector we can give them for a core?? (Ford/Alliant don't care about 'core condition' they do NOT rebuild them) Unless there is a torn o-ring or coked-up nozzle - not much to look at without a teardown.
Meanwhile, AAA plus premium will tow your truck 150 miles (4) times per year - for free as well as lockout service for home and car, fuel if ya run out etc. Then AAA RV includes towing for the camper. Good Sam (RV roadside assistance) will tow your stuff HOME, no matter where you are. Both help with 'other' expenses as well. This is the best piece of mind I have when traveling!!
I'll 2nd (3rd or whatever!) what they said about being as comfy as ya can BEFORE leaving town. Ask them to show you (print out?) the scan info - NO CODES. Good advice about having them document how they came to their conclusion and EXACTLY what work was done.
OK, you can almost hold your breath until its over now!! No need to let it run overnite - but plugging in block heater won't hurt if you do have a GP issue.
I disagree about the extended idling - at least all day/nite idle. These engines run cold and poor combustion is a problem, especially in cold weather. Every once in awhile is prolly OK!! (it could be better than being broke down - but I'm not sure leaving your truck running will prevent this) I have 'hi-idle' tune on my chip and this is what I use while napping at the rest area or waiting for kiddos at the bus stop...
This is where its located. Lay on your back infront of the passenger side tire with your legs out past the bumper. You will see wires and aclip connected to it. Unclip it and I used a deep well socket and was able to reach it.

This is what a new one will look like. Change the bracket and all.
I don'tknow what time you will be leaving or haw far you will travel today. You are about 225 miles from Jackpot, Nv. Cactus Pete's Casino has a nice CG and the price is right. Great food at the casino, nice swimming pool for the kids to unwind. If you stop there go to the lower CG as it is quiet and best wifi.
WOW! I've been following this from the start and it seems like days have gone by. Pansen you sure have learned alot and so have I. I hope everything works out and dont let the dealer snowball you. A wing and a prayer and you'll get home safe and sound. Please keep us posted on how the truck is running.
Your situation really sucks and like everyone says, I hope it works out.
I am going to be printing this thread and the linked threads out and putting it in my truck as my own manual along with the tools and a spare cps to join all of the other crap I carry around. I have to say of all the forums I have been on this one is by far the best for people helping each other out, and for people knowing a serious amount of information and being able communicate it effectively.
Too bad about the $ you'll be spending. At least you are getting going.
FWIW I wouldn't worry about a bad GPR. If it is that cold and hard to start, I just jump the terminals with a pliars or even jumper cables would work. Keep that in mind for later as it sounds it will get fixed for now.
I'm proud of how well you are handling this. You got on this forum and took the bull by the horns! Many are learning from this thread. My wife does get irritated when I sit on here for hours, but she will admit what a great place we have here. Your story has been talked about in our house and at work for a few days. Even people that don't read this are praying for you. God bless you and your family.
Any updates? Did they get it going, or have they now determined there are additional parts that need to be replaced?

I'll tell you what to do now. Teach the not yelling at the hubby trick to my wife

Yes, this is common. The old injector will need to be returned to the rebuilder if you take it with you. Of course if the new injector doesn't fix things, demand they put the old one back in (with new o-rings of course) and fix the real problem.
Also pay very close attention to how the truck idles. I believe the injectors Ford will install will be remans, not new, and some reman injectors can give you a rough idle. Ask them what kind of warranty the "new" injector comes with and get it in writing. Unfortunately, after an injector change you'll need to work all the air out of the high pressure oil system to get the truck to idle smooth, and that can take up to 50 miles or so.

Other than ohming the soleniod or inspecting the injector o-rings, I'm not really sure what you'll see by doing this, but take pictures so we can see it too.
Hi guys. I'm extremely tired as we had a rough day today. My 3 yr old did a face plant from the back of the truck at the dealership, and he had to have 17 stitches and gravel irrigated from wounds on his forehead. Run of bad luck!
The tech showed me the injector, and he said it had" scoring" on it, and both o-rings were gone completely. The truck does sound great, and starts right up now, whereas before it took some cranking. We hooked up the rv, gave farmer guy a thank you card, and left after getting my kid stitched up. We had a miserable exp at an rv park, and we ended up driving to Winnemucca, NV where we are boondocking for the night. I hope the truck starts tomorrow!
I need to get good sam roadside. And some better days.
