Here is how to test your glow plug realy.
Welcome to guzzle's Stancor GPR replacement Mod Web Page

Here is for testing your glowplugs and injectors. This will also check your under cover valve harness.

Morning, how are things going? I really wish someone from FTE would be in the area you are in and could help maybe. I still am thinking CPS or fuel problem. Keep us informed today please.

Give us an update when you can.

Note: We have the same year truck.

On the cps. My truck acted-up off and on for about a month before i replaced it. A very uncomfortable feeling (i used your term) before i replaced it. It fails intermittant, does not always just go bad quit without working anymore.

I will say that if you run only diesel i expect your pump (on the frame rail under the seat-i mentioned it earlier) is OK.

Buy a couple of extra 20a fuses for the under hood fuse box. Fuse 19 (closest to firewall and brake booster) will blow before the pump goes bad.
Always change the fuse before considering replacing the pump. I have blown a couple of these (when i had a clog in my tank).
Just to look at the fuses, i cannot tell good from bad. I have to ohm them out.
I still say your pump is likely OK. Just offering some thoughts.

Just know that you will not need 'a new truck', this is very fixable, it just needs to be traced down. You have a great truck that you will want for many years.

It sounds to me as a CPS issue

Auto zone should have a condensed 'Chiltons' manuel for the Ford trucks, 1999-2003. I bought one at 'O'reilly. It does not go into a great detail as to what to check...check... but shows general areas that will help us find out what is wrong with your truck.

Do not... do not, let the dealer talk you into any big expence. this is a very fixable proble of a 'eletrical' or fuel issue and not some big over haul.

I'm thinking CPS.....sound like what my truck (2003) did when it went bad, before recall The truck would die and be hard to start but once it did it ran fine until the CPS acted up again?

Also how did your Power Stroke cove get blown off?

.....Tom

I really hope y'all have this worked out this AM and it was nothing terribly complex (or expensive!).

My advice moving past this 'adventure' is to invest in AAA Plus RV and/or Good Sam Club. These will provide you with FREE towing - truck & RV - and offer other benefits like rental cars and hotel reimbursements. You only have to use this service ONCE to pay for years and years of coverage/premiums.

Next is invest in a quality scan tool. The Auto Enginuity (AE) is a PC-based scan tool that will almost keep you from ever having to go to the stealership again. With this tool and help from your friendly FTE members, you can at least TELL the dealer or other mechanic whats wrong and what you want fixed - and we'll tell you if they are treating you fairly. I know people who were charged over $100 just to hook up a scan tool - it only takes avoiding that a couple times to justify this tool - not to mention the ability to repair stuff yourself without a tow!
Riffraff Diesel: Total Ford Enhanced Bundle

Another slightly less expensive option is the Aeroforce Interceptor Scangauge. This is a standard 2" dia gauge that can do most of what the AE can do, but is cooler in some ways because its there all the time - no PC required. Call RiffRaff about these also... There are lots of options for 'mounting' a gauge like this!!

You all are awesome!

My husband decided we need to get home and he felt the dealership might be the quickest way to do that, so he left this morning to go to the dealership (he had to walk 2 miles), and he has all of the notes from this thread in his hand. I will make sure they do not charge us for a big expense, without coming to you guys to ask first, anyway. I put CPS as the first thing to look at, including recall info, and asked this case to be treated like an emergency. I hope they are able to help, and that they do the right thing. I'm so stressed out, and the area we are at is not good for 3 little kids, 6 yrs old and younger.

ETA: The dealership told my husband that they will look at it this afternoon, and check on the cps recall and run the diagnostic. My husband is renting a car. UGH.

You have a great truck there and when you get it going you will be very happy that you have it.

Your husband may walk up to it and hop in and it will fire right up. When my CPS was 'going bad' it only 'Shut me down' when I when through a water spray when it was raining. I put in a new CPS and 'same thing'... when it was raining, (and I was flying down the road at 60 MPH) it would die as if the key was turned off. I put a third CPS in it, but this time I coated the rubber seal with vasoline to make sure that I had a good water tight seal. No problems since, but I do have a spare in the glove box.

I can say I've been there.... I will also say that my kids have been camping since they were conceived (maybe not an exaggeration, lol ) and we have probably been wet, tired, hot, cold, hungry, eaten by bugs, etc - but we have NEVER had a BAD camping trip. Even the times we thought we were uncomfortable are among our fondest and most memorable trips!! I hope y'all are able to 'spin' this inconvenience and provide the kiddos with valuable lessons about dealing with 'emergencies' and keeping your cool. This sounds like an amazing trip, I hope this becomes a funny part of the story they'll tell about the adventure one day - (......and then Dad had to WALK all the way to town.... )

What about this? We just met these folks last night and they already have enough posts for a signature? That should be some kind of a record.

I've been on this board for awhile, but we've been traveling for nearly 2 months straight.

Anyway, the dealership called us back and said this:

#2 injector broken and stuck open.
glow plug relay bad.
They want to charge $900

Does this sound reasonable? I think it does, but then I don't know.

And is it possible to dispute the charges with my cc co. about the mechanic who worked on our truck and did NOT fix the problem?

Thanks for your help, guys!

the 'Glow Plug Relay' will not Kill the motor after it is running and Neither will the 'injector' that is 'stck open'.

I think that the Dealer is blowing smoke as the truck should not shut down with these problems.

The bad 'Glow Plug Relay' will give you 'hard starts' if it is colder than 50 degrees as the glow plugs are not 'on', but the 'ether' will get it to fire (don't use this 'trick' to much) . You can change it out on your own. Napa Auto parts has the GPR109 should be less that 30.00. O'Reillys and Autozone are a lot higher.

The 'stuck open' injector sounds alfull fishy as it will make the truck run rough but not shut it down or not make it want to start....

buyer beware.

I know it would be cheaper to get the parts and do it ourselves, but we are such n00bs, and with the 3 small boys and nowhere to work on it etc, I think we need to let the shop take care of it. We're crunched for time, as well.

After all of the reading I did last night and today, and with your guys' help, I do believe this sounds right. It explains the oil loss, too. The HPOP would have pushed the oil through and it would leak out the injector, right? And the glow plug relay looked like crap to me when I inspected it, so I believe that on looks alone. lol
