The engine does run hotter. Never gotten close to anything to worry about but the fan clutch is hooked up just about all the time. Sounds like an air craft going down the runway. LOL. Wonder if I should go electric and just get rid of it all together? Got other priorities first. LOL. One thing at a time.
It's just a little scary to think of what could happen by losing oil pressure under load.

I'm going to throw something out there for thought, maybe it will help? Maybe it won't.

I'm going to talk Cummins because that's where my LITTLE bit of turbo knowlege comes from.

The '89-'91 Dodge-Cummins trucks had no intercoolers but they had an 18-18.5 cubic centimeter turbo housing. Then in '91.5-'93 they had a 21 cubic centimeter turbo housing.
Both Holset mfg.
Neither had a wastegate.
The early 18 CM motors were much "quicker" than the later 21s.
The HP and torque ratings were exactly the same 160/400. The intercooler was added purely for emmissions reasons.
The problem is I have never had a boost gauge on my Dodge so I don't know what the boost pressure is with either system. I would guess 20 PSI at most since my Dad's '97 with a wastegate gets up to 30 or so and it is WAY more powerfull and much quicker.
My '97 PowerStroke (no wastegate, totally stock) never made more than 16.

PERSONALLY I don't think an intercooler is worth it untill you're getting somewhere around 20 PSI.

I also think a non-wastegated turbo is D_U_M_B...........dumb.

When you stop and think about it, it ALL makes sense. So ya have a little less boost. That can be easily remedied. The charge air being so much cooler ads more horse power than the loss of boost takes away and you have lower egt's on top of it. Adjust the boost back up to where it was (or more) and it sounds like nothing but good can come out of it. When I turned my torque screw back in a couple of turns I went from 10 to 8 pounds of boost from the drop in fuel supply but the response is much better now out of the gate. When I put all the ATS stuff on, their directions say 3 turns on the rod to the waste gate lever is equal to 1 pound of boost. Gonna have to try that one.

Agreed on the intercooler...but you do know that external wastegates can be added, right? Nothing exclusive about wastegated turbos except they are designed to protect from overboosting via a release valve instead of being designed to naturally keep the boost down to a certain level per application.

I think the 7psi boost loss that David85 talked about is probably a figure from a high boost range (40psi or so).

I (again PERSONALLY) would never go to the trouble, I don't think it's worth it.
When I get my 6.9L built up and run around 18-20 PSI I may change my mind.

What I've heard is the thresh hold for intercooling is somewhere between 10-15 PSI depending on the engine. I know in the case of the diesel offered briefly in the ranger (2.3 turbo), they are stock 10~14 PSI max boost but later engines were upgraded with an intercooler even though boost didn't go up by very much. Thats not to say you can't go above that without an IC, but thats the butter zone for where it becomes beneficial. Below that, there isn't much gain, and above that (in theory) some engines loose Hp due to super heating of the intake charge.

I'm trying to think if a direct injected engine would behave any differently. Really don't know....

I don't really need one on the F250, but that ranger could sure use one. Sure wish my turbo could spool like that tiny little mitsubishi setup. Seriously, the turbo in the ranger is smaller than a T3 and just SCREAMS with some wastegate and fuel screw tweaks! Almost scary.

Strange times we live in. Dodge/Cummins is now planning to build a 6.9 diesel instead of a cummins swap, Dave is now building up a powerstroke, and here I am singing the praises of a mitsubishi diesel in a ranger.

I still have my 86 sitting right beside the Stroke, and it is not going anywhere.

My 86 weighs 8000 pounds and the Stroke weighs 7300 pounds.

As of right now with a few mods to the Stroke, it still can't catch my IDI even though the E4OD shifts faster than I shift my four speed.

Since the IDI motor is done, now it gets body work.

Since the Stroke has an almost perfect body, it gets motor work.
Hopefully I can make it as fast as the IDI is without breaking the bank..

I'm in a similar bind at the moment. The complete running gear and powertrain in my truck have never been better but rust is starting to take hold. Was hoping to find a strait, rust free box and then make a copy out of fiberglass for the diesel and use the steel box on the F150 after matching the paint. So far I can't seem to find one though. Eventually I would like to replace the fenders with composite as well. I don't bash through bushes or branches with my truck but road salt at 70 MPH does take a toll on steel.

We have the tooling now to carve 3D plugs but just need some good donor parts and the time......always the time.............

I thought I heard you mention you were thinking of replacing an IDI engine with a cummins a while back....I'm not complaining!

Nope, never have. I always tell people it's kinda dumb to to do to an IDI unless you're trying to make some mega-powered truck that's useless in the real world.
I even gave thought to putting an IDI in my Wife's Suburban, her TBI 350 won't die though. In fact the only thing that breaks on that thing is the crummy GM interior.
