Intercooler stuff

I would like to install an aftermarket intercooler like the DI intercooler. But I have heard nothing but bad about the intercooler pipe kits from gts. Is is possible to get the pipes from Banks and not their intercooler? What other kits are available to do this with out having to modify 99+ pipes? I am looking for a big drop in egts when towing, my goal is to outrun my dads stock 6oh up a 7 mile 6% mountain with a trailer. I could probally do it now but I have to back out of it so much due to >1300* temps. Am I going overboard with this "race intercooler"? Will the 6oh cooler give me what I am looking for? Beans stage 1's are in the near future (hopefully).

if your gonna put bigger injectors in put the bigger intercooler in it makes a large differnce. the 7.3 and 6oh coolers just dont flow enough by the time you add all that extra fuel.

I have seen spearco ads in mags. and talked about in the 7.3 superduty forums. Also the 6oh banks technicooler. Would these be something to look into? But now we are talking big bucks huh..

i will never get bigger fuel than 2's so i am happy with a stocker for my application.

I know I wish another company would come out with a kit like GTS's. I found the ATS kit the cheapiest that might be the option I go with

The ats kit does not look that effective (very small intercooler and small pipes). And it is still over $1000.

the ats and hypermax (for a obs) work fine for a 130cc injector max

the tapercore and spearco, and the DI IC which is made by garrett can handle alot more.

the banks 6oh isnt much bigger than the 7.3 technicooler. my issue with the banks is its powdercoated which is an insulator. hard to get heat through powdercoating.

ive been working on a full pipe kit from the compressor to the intake plenums, but time and demand....

if i had enough of a demand i could build enough of them.

the largest problem with the gts kit was end flow numbers too much restriction in the pipes and too much restriction in the intercooler.

with 3 45's and 5 90's in the pipes that is way too much flow restriction. there are ways to route the pipes to get alot less restriction it just takes more work to design the pipes. the gts pipes were the simplest way to get them in there.

the whole thing with choosing your setup is what do you want to do with your truck?
how much power do you want to make and what for?

the spearco is $1200 from blackwidowdiesel
DI is $1200
tapercore is $1700 including pipes (for a superduty) from tymar

Do you have any pics of what you have done so far?

If you think about it, banks wants almost $1500 for their kit. If you could buy a DI intercooler for $1200 and get a good set of pipes, all for close to or a little more than thier standard "kit". It would be WAY more effective

I bet if you could make a good quality set of pipes for a fair price many users of FTE would buy a set. BUT it would keep you busy. Many people have bought the gts kits for $600, so your right ~$500 would be a fair price

if i had enough serious takers i would. its just setting everything up so it can be a production item to keep cost reasonable. i could make a pipe set from compressor to intake plenum and brackets for the cooler whether it be the stock 7.3, 6.0, or the spearco or the DI cooler but its gonna be pricey since it ends up being a single run all handbuilt. intake y is aluminum with the sections machined down to hold the boots and all tig welded. the hot side pipe is a 2 section pipe theres a hard connection to the turbo and a new bracket to hold the cooler pipe and the intake pipe. a hump hose connection to handle the motor/chassis movement. i can build them, it ends up being race/show quality gear. its just alot of work.

I bet there were a lot of man hours into designing your system. Like you say if you cannot buy this stuff in bulk to save costs it would get expensive. And even more time consuming for you having to build one every now and then.
Do you have this setup on your truck? if so which intercooler are you running?
