The last time I talked to ATS, they said they would continue to carry the IDI kits untill they wore out the tooling they manufacture the parts with.

Once that happens, no more IDI turbo systems since they don't sell enough IDI systems now to ever pay for new tooling.

If you look at their website, they are currently dropping support for the OBS (94 thru 97) Power Strokes as well.

It doesn't look like either one would work, no provisions for the waste gate

There's a guy (Bell Turbo) that lives about 25 miles from me that is a wiz on turbos. He's in Philomath, OR, he's known world wide for his systems. I've seen him referenced on several trucks, projects etc. in magazines.
I'm sure he doesn't have an IDI "system" but when I do my Cummins swap (into a Dodge, not a Ford) I'm going to him. If ATS quits before I get their parts I need or my turbo(s) need serviced I'm going to him also.

I have to say I'm SUPER happy with the ATS system Ford put on my '94 and I don't even have any of the upgrades yet.

if you have a kit from ats you alreay have what we want. The factory installed turbos have a smaller turbo exhaust elbow and smaller and crushed downpipe

All this talk about intercooling has me thinking. Bad things happen when I start thinking.

The problem with the 80-86 trucks is they don't have much room up front for intercoolers. Add the double transmission cooler and the AC radiator and there isn't much room for much else up front even with a custom grill. I would also really like to intercool that diesel ranger since that little bigger can boost like crazy with a turbo thats actually smaller than a T3 garrett.

Saw a listing for an intercooler off a 6.0 diesel a couple days ago for $100 but I doubt I could make something like that fit in my truck. The ranger?? not even sure what size to go with from a performance standpoint let alone physically making it fit.

Never was really concerned much with lag although with an automatic its not as big a concern as with a manual transmission. From what I hear though, you don't really need as much boost with an intercooler to get the same amount of power since the engine is being fed more dense air so the added lag isn't as noticeable as some might think. But I can't comment first hand on that.

Right, which is ATS but not their bigger elbow and down pipe. That's what I meant by no upgrades.

I've seen A LOT of guys running 6.0L intercoolers in their first gen. PSs.

On thing I notice sometimes in these discussions is an almost obsessive assertion that if you go with too large an intercooler, it will cause a massive drop on boost pressure due to being "less effiecient" simply because its larger. I haven't really been able to wrap my head around this concept because I would think a larger intercooler would have to be able to flow more for the higher CFM of bigger engines in terms of boost pressure and displacement. I just don't understand how going with an oversized intercooler can kill power.

Can anyone explain?

Did some measuring last night on the space behind the grill of my truck at I might just be able to fit something like this in there:

GODSPEED FMIC TYPE-WX INTERCOOLER 30x10x3 GOLF JETTA on eBay.ca (item 260643701952 end time 06-Aug-10 23:10:42 EDT)

I'd contact a company like the one below and see if they can tell you inf your looking for. I can comprehend going with a large cooler can lower boost by a couple of psi but so what. If I lost 2psi I'd crank close the wastegate to gain 3-5psi to compensate. I also considered a heat exchanger water to air style like the ford lightning. Suppose to do a better job but it requires plumbing for the coolant.
