Good morning guys.
How hard is it to get a CDL
The travel trailers we are looking at to maybe get in the next couple of years are over 10,000 lbs.
As I under stand it with my truck ( with commercial plates ) and a trailer over 10,000 lbs I need a CDL.
I would not need the air brake cert.
Pete if you have the book or paperwork for the test can I look at it?
Andy there's tons of material online for CDL stuff. Over 10,000 GVW trailer = CDL required and once you've got your CDL the state considers you a "professional driver" so you will get less leniency on the side of the road (usually) and your allowable BAC before DUI is about half. You also need to carry a "med card" and get it renewed every 2 years.
You can read the CDL handbook there or if you don't mind waiting I'll grab a hard copy at DMV when I go for my permit next month.
In my opinion it's easiest to just have a class A CDL and not have to worry about "can i drive it?" again.
I intend to get CDL class A (combination vehicle) and air brakes at the same time. I'll go back at a later date and get a tanker endorsement and doubles endorsement. I haven't been able to find any information on whether or not I can get those at 18 or if I can't get them til I'm 21. I know I'm limited to intrastate (not interstate) until I'm 21 which is stupid cause I can have 2 years under my belt and not be able to legally go interstate while someone 21 can go interstate the day they get their CDL.
