[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Jan-02 AT 04:38 AM (EST)]Hi everybody,
I just picked up a '99 EB and I don't have the code for the pushbutton keyless entry. I was told by a dealership that the factory code is on the keyless entry unit behind the door panel. First, can anybody verify this information, and if so, is it difficult to remove the door panel? Does it simply pop out?
Also, has anybody ever replaced a security key and a remote enty transmitter? How much did they set you back? Although the vehicle is in excellent condition, they only had 1 key and no transmitters.
Much thanks,
Jeff
{edit: I just found my answers in the archives! This is an informative board)
I just bought a 2001 Expedition and only got one key and one remote. I have called multiple delaers in Southern CA and have been quoted $60 for the remote and $110 for the key. These numbers seem crazy is there another way to get replacement remotes and keys without getting ripped off?
Get on Ebay! I had the same problem and have found both the remote and key on there. We only need one more remote, we had both keys. I think that you can get brand new ones with the instructions for about $20.
I just went through this. I purchased one remote off ebay for $10 to go along with the one key I had. I saw key blanks on there for $20, but didn't want to chance getting the wrong one. I got the key blank and cut for $24 from the dealer. While there I got weak and bought one remote. They listed at $60 but he gave it to me for $55.
If you have only one key then you have to have the dealer program it whether you provide the key blank or not. This is normally an $80 charge (2 different dealers gave me this number), but he knocked it down to $60 while I waited. They (Peyton Cramer Lincoln Mercury in Torrance, CA) did this since it was my first trip to this dealer and it worked. They were friendly and fair and sqeezed my truck in for a re-programming on a late Sat. afternoon. They also do free washes with service.
No need to remove the door panel. There is a (RAP) module located behind the fuse box. You need to lie on your back in the driver's area to see it. It is attached at the firewall with your head close to the brake pedal you should see it. You may be able to see the 5 digit factory code on the sticker, if not you'll have to remove it. There are 2- 3/8" bolts holding it in place. Good Luck!
I had the same problem when I was in need of a new key, but fortunately my manual stated the you must have an original key in which must be placed in the ignition and turned to the on postion until the check engine light goes off, then you have only seconds to turn to the off position, place the new key into the ignition and turn to the on position until the check engine light goes off and the new key is then programmed for that vehicle. There is also a limit on how many keys your internal computer will program for you. I think it's 7 or 8.
I only had one key for my98, but I couldn't buy a blank key. I was told that the key had a chip in it, and could only be programed by the dealer. Anyway, 60 bones later, I got another key.
Well, I just walked right into the parts section of the dealership, asked for a key and a remote in which I had already done my homework, and was told by the salesman that I would have to pay the dealer to have both of them programmed. Well, just like any other part store, all I replied with, " I just want the parts ", I got a strange look from the salesman along both parts. I had the key cut at the local WAL-MART, walked out to the parking lot climed in and programmed my key. Later I made it home and programmed my remote in the driveway. The only thing that I regret is that I could have gotten them both a lot cheaper on Ebay. You can also type in keword " remote " on this site to find instructions on how to program your transmitter. Just remember at the final step of remote programming you must depress the same button on bot remotes at the same time.

Johnny Mo is right the keyless code is on the RAP. You need to be fairly flexible to read it. It is in BOLD BLACK numbers on the rap. As far as the key and remote you can get hem on EBay. Have the key cut at a local locksmith or wherever, program the remote yourself in about 3 minutes.
BUT.............. with 99s you need to have to keys to program additional keys. Since you only have one you need to get the dealer to program the new key. Been there done that............................
