Can´t believe it : last weekend I did my first longer trip with new starter onboard. While restarting with fully-heated engine I noticed the same sluggish noise from the starter as before, not as "overstrained" as the old one did, but noticable. Facing with this I´m awaken to the fact that the old starter only had problems with fully-heated engine but did fine on cold starts.

Is this a heat issue from the block hugger headers nearby? Or is it something inside the engine after build-up from 8.0:1 to 10.5:1 cr ?

I can´t separate this because I fitted the headers together with the build-up.
Should I create kind of a heat shield ?

Any idea anyone, please ?

@ WYOMING : good point, but there are BIG grounds to frame, chassis and engine and BIG wires from solenoid ....

That compression would have nothing to do with it. I'd put a multi meter on it, turn it over and see what amps it's drawing when it's acting up & get back to us.

A heat shield shouldn't be too hard to mock up for a quick trial to prove the point. Some of the more pricey starters are indexable and state that one of the benefits is the ability to move the starter away from hot exhausts. Worth a shot.

OK, guess I´ll go to a local `yard, search for a insulation of a muffler from a car and create a shield for the starter.

Thanks ... I´ll let you know if it works.

Yeah its odd you are having issues with the stock starters on only 10:1 cr. I was running 12.5:1 on a stock starter with no issues in my mud boggers. Only proble i had was when it would get dirty and rust out (have to pull them apart every 3-4 races and clean them). Only thing is i have a ground from the frame to battery and engine block to frame (very important as you most likely have everything rubber mounted). How big of battery do you run (this could be the issue too)?

Cody,

the battery specs are 12V 63 AH 510 A; this is german/european specs but should be the same in the US/Canada.
As I stated before I only have issues with hot engine, no problems on cold starts. My suspicion on CR was because I never had starter issues before the build-up. Meanwhile I tend towards the heat variant, because it occurs less with upcoming Winter and decreasing temperatures.

Thanks anyway !

Battery is way toooo small, i take it thats a 510 Cold cranking amp battery? If so ditch it and run at least a 900CCA rated battery (I run 1100cca series 31 industrial batteries on mine). The factory starters are built pretty heavy and can take a fair bit of juice without burning out.

Well yes, the CCA-number is not high but fas it is a cold crank number I do not need such a high number because I don´t move my truck in the winter.

It´s not a daily driver and it sits in a tempered garage now until next year march ....

Guess you need a strong battery there in Coutts, you are at 3500 ft elevation and I assume it´s getting pretty cold there in the winter.

But thanks for pointing me on that, I´ll keep it in mind. Next thing for me is the heat shield.

That is your problem, try a bigger battery, and odds are your problem will go away (factory batteries on the trucks are larger than 500cca's to IIRC, 800 sounds familar).
