Hi there, im really hoping i can get some help here. I have a '72 F250 4x4 with a 351 Cleveland and C6 tranny. (The transfer box is a Dana 24). So i am lately having trouble getting moving when i fire her up. Start her up in park, let the motor idle and settle, let the handbrake down shift to reverse or drive and then she is just not willing to go anywhere without some happy pedal encouragement. After a while she will "free up" and happily trot along. Also im getting a horrible (i think?) 5 mpg. Mebe if the drag free up it will increase. Anytips/possible diagnoses?
I know Ford installed the 351C in Australian trucks, I'd have to guess they did the same in South Africa where this guy is, too.
Valdor - you're basically saying the truck won't move in forward or reverse unless 1) you step on the gas, or 2) the truck warms up, correct?
Looking at #1, a cold engine/transmission... you move the gear shift from Park to Reverse or Drive, do the engine RPMs drop and can you feel the transmission going into gear?
Check your ATF level, tranny needs to be warm to do it....

Dear sir,
thank you for your reply, and yes to both your questions, i can clearly feel she goes into gear and the revvs do drop when goin from park to drive or reverse. Mark a. has said something that interists me. will ask below his comment.
Oh BTW, as far as i can tell by almost without exception Ford South Africa has installed the 300 i6 in all F-series (F100,250,350) with the exception of a 4.1 L Perkins diesel i6. The Cleveland V8 is almost certainly an afetrmarket convertion. I have the truck for about 5 month and 'cept the horrible 5mpg i LOVE IT!!!
Kindest regards,
Dear Mark a,
I am absolutely no mechanic but what you suggest makes so much sense (to the layman in me atleast). The truck feels like the handbrake is applied or im stepping on the brake pedal trying to pull away. Later it loosens up though.. Til i switch off and pull away agen that is... Does this make any sense regarding your "innititial prognosis" ?
That sounds fair about the handbrake, but I don't know about it freeing up. Maybe you just have more momentum. I'd look at that real quick as it will destroy the drum/rotor pretty quick if it is that.

Dear crsmiffy.
Have been checcking out the brakes and it is not that as it easily spins around. Beartracks mentioned somrthing about the chike . At first thought he may have misunderstood me but after chatting to someone it seems this may indeed be the case.... Or possibillity atleast.
Thank you for you reply, all advice is welcome and investigated.
Valdor
try this next time you start it up and its dead cold get it in gear and drive it for a 1/4 mile then get out and see if any of the 4 brakes are Hot.
If so then you have most likely found the problem.
You can check the choke by removing the aircleaner. Hold the throttle open slightly (engine off) and push on the choke plate. On a cool morning it should just close by itself. Then after it warms up you need to be sure it opens all the way.

Hi there, so sorry for not replying to you all who try helping me out. Was away (That damm activitty called work...).
I took the aircleaner off while idling and the choke plate was in uprite possition.. Is this open ?
