guys are using the late model Mustang style mini-starters. sometimes you can fit a stock replacement right off the shelf if you can find the corect application that works for you, or you can go aftermarket(many times just a stock replacement painted and stickered). take a look at these links...
Hey Bill, that´s fine, I see you picked up some nice places to visit, hope you enjoyed your time here !
I`ve been in the US to, but it only lasted for New York City, so far..... hope to come again for a NASCAR race and travel some states !
Sorry to ask again but is one of the ID engineering no´s you´ve posted before the gear reduction type for the 1970´ Lincoln´s, Mark´s or fullsized Ford´s etc. ?
This would help me getting in touch with second hand dealers.
Thank you anyway, Bill !
The ID numbers will be found on 1971/82 400 starter's with an A/T, which are not the same as 429/460 starters w/ or w/o gear reduction.
If you visit LA LA Land (Hollywood term for Los Angeles), swing on by...I've got a bottle of Zeller Schwarze Katz Rieisling we could share.
Well it seems the lifetime warranty is only for the standard replacement starter without reduction gear. I. e. for a powermaster starter I will have just 1 year warranty at advance auto parts ....
.... and I MUST have a reduction gear starter ´cause it almost breaks my heart when I hear my old starter work so hard to put life to the 400 run.
Thank you anyway, I´ll keep this company in my favourite list.
I was in touch with a big local Ford dealer, they are not familar with these p/n respectively have to do a special order, way to expensive.
Made some research online and at ´yards : nothing, everybody asked me "what is it : a 400 ?? 335 series ????"
Before I´ll get confused with all these p/n and w/gear or w/o gear I better leave it and go aftermarket, gcclark gave me some good links and there is still Summit or Jegs ....
Well Bill, thank you very much for your help, again I´ve learned a lot !
You have tastefullness on the wine and it´s not a bad idea to visit the LA area. And there is the Fontana raceway ...
... I´ll let you know when I plan my travel .... please let me know if you want me to bring some more of that Zeller "black cat" for you ... what about some exchange with a california shiraz ?
I have a 400 / C6 combo in my 79 f-250. I used a starter off of a 1995 f-250 with a 460 and automatic trans. I have had it on the truck for about 6 or 7 months now, and havent had a single problem with it.
Hope this helps.
Looking back at my notes from when i was trying to find a newer starter option, the starter from a 92-97 f-250 with a 460 and automatic will work.
It is a gear reduction starter. I did have to change the wiring. I had to run a heavy gauge (positive) wire to the starter from the battery (I ran a bettery cable from the positive side of the starter solenoid to the starter mounted solenoid). Then had to run a wire that is hot while cranking (only while cranking) to the starter mounted solenoid. Easy wiring job. I am only using 2 of the original posts on the fender mounted starter solenoid.
I made sure that since the heavy gauge wire is a constant hot wire, that is directly off the battery (basically) that it is well insulated and away from any rubbing points along the chassis. If you try this setup, BE CAREFUL and plan ahead, and keep it well insulated to avoid grounding out the battery to the chassis.
so you just used the stock solenoid as a junction block and ran an extension battery cable off the hot battery terminal to the starter, and used the S terminal wire to trip the solenoid mounted starter?
i've seen it done where the stock solenoid stays operational and the starter mounted solenoid gets a short little jumper from the battery cable terminal. when the stock solenoid trips, both the starter and the starter mounted solenoid get power
but that's good info on the late model mini starter, same application different year
you did better than me. I have been asking this same question myself recently to little/no avail. heard about the later big block reduction type not it's not indexable. I am interested to see how it goes. $50 bucks is pretty good.
my question is on the wiring to starter and proper grounding? I run a 10 to 1 big block and run OEM starters. i very rarely kill starters. the secret to my sucess isn't the starter its the wiring. I run big grounds to frame and big wires from solenoid. I have also twin winches on my truck and air compressors that really put a load on my electrical system. so far the starter is the least of my problems and under heavy loads with winches my wiring has to be upgraded or I'm dead in the water. Most people have sub par wiring and nice componets in the middle. recipe for disaster of a good part on a engine. I live in cold weather and oil gets thick and starter demands can get serious also. things to lookover on your project and rethink and upgrade. I have winches that can do some serious work and their weak link is the batteries and wiring. catch you later and good luck.
