Still at work.
Brandon the engine started knocking under load louder than usual on one cylinder.
On decel you could hear something knocking, so I am positive it was something mechanical letting go. I'm guessing it's a piston rocking.
It definately wasn't pushrods and rockers. I put in a set and it made no difference and the ones that came out were in perfect condition.
So I'll have a brand new set of rockers and push rods in the classified in the near future.
And yes, Lisa, the oil pan is coming off of the old engine to see if I can determine the cause. I'm not going beyond a visual inspection because I don't want to screw up on the $1500.00 core charge. Ford is a little particular and I don't want to have to pay extra just because I took it apart.
Anyway, working late tonight to get ready for the surgery tomorrow, catch you all a little later.
.
Anyone in the area can stop by tomorrow and Friday if they want.
Another thought: as much as I would love to tear down the motor for curiosity's sake, I'm kind of pressed for time these days, so it kills a lot of the curiosity that I have about the engine.
I just want a good running truck so that I can go on vacation without wondering if I will be able to make it home without any "incidents".
Thats very nice of you Jim but I believe it's the engine Dan's talking about, right Dan?? Good luck for a smooth switchout Dan, pics if you have time...
Hope you're still considering getting an oil analysis done. It would be interesting to see what that says compared to what you observe when you pull the pan.
What are you doing to the new pan before you install the engine? Powdercoat, extra paint, or anything? Still plan on welding the cooler jets I presume?

Yes on the analysis, although there is only about 500 or less miles on this last oil change.
Time does not allow me to do anything extra to the pan or to the jets.
I have a complete engine from valve covers to the oil pan and I just need to get it installed.
Rust is not really an issue for me as I live in a rust free area and the pan rot on the first motor is left over from the previous owner.
.
If I have time I will be pulling the pan on the old motor and doing a visual inspection of the piston skirts, but that's about it.
Again, it's a time issue and also now it's about being able to get the full credit on the $1500.00 core charge.
As it stands right now, the shop is still full of cars that I need to get back to the customers. The work on them is completed, but I was there until 8:00 last night getting to that point.
I wanted them done and back to the owners, with the truck on stands in the shop with the fluids draining overnight into buckets by now.
So I'm down a half day already.
