Dan... sorry to hera about this unexpected/undesired expense, but i'm glad you've gotten it behind you at this point. Great work

BTW... Benjamin's Jetta is doing great... never found the piece of drill bit, so it evidently either sannk into the bottom of the oil pan or skipped completely outside of the open engine area.

Not much, but this truck has spent it's entire life pulling very heavy 5th wheels.
Any hill more than 4% is WOT and slowing down.

Great job on Dan, glad your up and running strong again!

Edit: I was just wondering if these engines have any amount of blow by when new?

I'm wondering the same ????? My new one does have a bit of blow by both out of the oil fill cap and the CCV. It's nothing major just a bit of vapor whick I think is pretty normal. It has to go somewhere !

Oh, that's good about the Jetta.

The new engine has twice the amount of blowby than the old one, but I expect that to settle down as the rings break in.

How long would you think that would take Dan ??? How many miles do we need to get on these new motors before we see less blow by ?????

Not really sure. 100-200 would be my guess.

I guess they need a lot more break in time than I thought.
Still have a lot of blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe when I start it cold, more than the old engine had by a lot.
They took the old engine away in a Ranger, LOL. That little truck squatted down pretty good when the cherry picker released.
Truck was pointing uphill when he drove away.

Dan,
I have been watching this thread and was wondering what the original issue was that you needed the new engine. Sorry if you have posted this and I did not find it. Link? How many miles were on the original engine too? Thanks for the nice pictures too.

Russ
It was still running good at 104,000 miles, but there was an engine knock on deceloration that started getting louder.
It still ran great, but I use this truck for pulling a large, heavy 5th wheel on vacations and I didn't want to take the risk of sticking a rod through the block while pulling a mountain pass 1000 miles from home.
The whole setup is 24k GVW. Every hill 4% or steeper results in WOT power with the rig slowing down until I have to downshift, even with a 4.88 rear axle.

Not to mention, that I've already been stranded by a transfer case that quit transferring on top of Mt. Rainier, forcing me to get a 100 mile tow back home for a quick repair so that I could run back down and bring my 5th wheel home.
And the next year the tranny lost a bearing, started grumbling in neutral.
That lack of reliability is what drove me to replace the engine this time, even though it ran perfectly.
I could hear something coming and I have a vacation planned this August to Yellowstone, this time it's with daughter and son in law with son in law's parents rig. (2002 F250 7.3 ZF6 4x4 pulling a 28 foot bumper pull.)
.
Hard to say what I would have bought if I had any foresight.
Matco tool salesman that comes into my shop drives a VERY nice Duramax and he tells me that his Allison is acting funny and it's $8000.00 to replace.
That amount is the sum total that I have spent on the truck for repairs up to this date, not counting the engine job.
For that amount I got a transfer case, transmission, clutch, two sets of fuel injectors, ball joints, universal joints, CB radio, a full set of six Michelin tires.

Your blowby will likely take thousands of miles before it goes down Dan.
